July 14 At the 44th MAC plenary meeting, the North rejects the South’s<br />

protests against shootings in the Han River estuary. The South<br />

denies intrusions over the MDL.<br />

August The South Korean government organizes large-scale violent<br />

anti-NNSC demonstrations. The NNSC’s relative freedom of<br />

movement in South Korea ends.<br />

August 3 At the 45th MAC meeting, the North protests against the<br />

South’s anti-NNSC demonstrations. The South responds that it<br />

had actively supported the NNSC and its inspection teams.<br />

August-July 1955 Due to the difficulties for the NNSC to conduct its work, the<br />

period is dominated by the issue of its dissolution.<br />

September 2 South Korea’s Prime Minister writes to the UNC Commander<br />

on the need to maintain power balance.<br />

September 15 At 116th MAC secretary meeting, the South admits protests<br />

from the North against violations of its airspace (no. 13).<br />

September 22 The NNSC submits its first joint monthly report to the MAC.<br />

September 29 At the 117th MAC secretary meeting, the South denies the<br />

North’s charge of kidnappings and detentions.<br />

October 6 At the 48th MAC plenary meeting and the 118 th MAC secretary<br />

meeting, US Lieutenant Colonel Herbert A. Peters is returned.<br />

The South denies the North’s protest against an armed attack<br />

across the MDL.<br />

November The US 8th Army drastically restricts the inspection teams’<br />

freedom of movement in South Korea.<br />

November 1 At the 119th MAC secretary meeting, the South admits one of<br />

the 16 cases of airspace violations the North had charged (no.<br />

14).<br />

November 22 At the 50th MAC plenary meeting, North Korea proposes<br />

civilian North-South exchanges across the DMZ.<br />

The South Korean government invites Czechs and Poles to<br />

leave the South within a week but the demand is not met.<br />
