The Pueblo crew attends naval hearings but no one was<br />

sentenced thanks to the Secretary of the Navy’s recommendation<br />

in May “...they have suffered enough, and further<br />

punishment would not be justified.“<br />

January 28 At the 284th MAC meeting, the North blames the US for<br />

introducing weapons into South Korea to train for war. The<br />

South criticizes the North for rearmaments.<br />

March 11 At the 285th MAC meeting, the South asserts that the UN<br />

troops protect South Korea and explains that as long as the<br />

threat from the North continues the troops would remain.<br />

March 15 North Korea attacks a UNC patrol replacing poles south of the<br />

MDL.<br />

One man is killed and three wounded.<br />

March 15-16 A North Korean infiltration attempt at sea takes place at<br />

Chumunjin along the east coast. The head of the police is<br />

killed. The crew drowns when the intruders’ rubber boat is<br />

sunk.<br />

March 17 At the 286th MAC meeting, the South protests against the<br />

March 15 incident, but the North claims there had been<br />

military provocations under the pretext of repairing the MDL<br />

markers.<br />

The North accuses the South of having begun firing at<br />

Chumunjin. The South protests the incident.<br />

March 26 At the 287th MAC meeting, the UNC protests the Chumunjin<br />

operation, but the North denies that it has anything to do with<br />

the incident.
