wounded. Five men from the vessel boarded a South Korean<br />

fishing boat and killed the captain and two men from the crew<br />

and injured two before escaping. A South Korean navy patrol<br />

vessel sank the vessel. The North claims that the incidents were<br />

entirely fabricated.<br />

May 20 At the 401st MAC meeting, the North blames the South for<br />

holding military exercises.<br />

The North protests that on May 12 there had been shootings by<br />

cannons, machine guns and automatic weapons at its guard<br />

posts in the JSA, but the South claims that the North had<br />

deliberately distorted facts.<br />

June 27 At the 402nd MAC meeting, the South asserts that on June 20<br />

a spy boat had intruded into its territorial waters. On June 21,<br />

the boat is overturned. Nine men were found dead. One<br />

survivor was captured alive.<br />

The North criticizes the South for fabricating the incident to<br />

divert attention from the suppression of demonstrations for<br />

democratization in Kwangju.<br />

November 11 At the 403rd MAC meeting, the South criticizes the North for<br />

having dispatched armed agents on November 3 and killed an<br />

innocent civilian. One is killed. Intrusion equipment was<br />

found.<br />

The North argues that the fabricated incident was used by the<br />

South Korean government to suppress its population by a<br />

shock effect.<br />

December 16 At the 404th MAC meeting, the South criticizes the attempted<br />

intrusion of armed North Korean agents on December 1. Two<br />

were shot to death but the third escaped. The landing craft<br />

sank, but the transport ship escaped. On December 2, a clash<br />

took place between an unidentified vessel and a Republic of<br />

Korea naval vessel. After firing back, the former caught fire and<br />

sank. Two intruders and two South Korean soldiers were<br />

killed. One intruder survived but was killed on December 6.<br />

The North claims that South Korea fabricated incidents with<br />

armed agents to suppress democracy activists and students and<br />
