The first written document, certifying
the existence of the village and
of its name, is the Bull of Pope Celestine
III of 1192. In Roman times
the territory of Bolognola was an
integral part of the Civitas camerinese.
During the municipal period
it was subjected to the Da Varano
family from Camerino. With the
Napoleonic invasion it was finally
assigned to the Musone District,
which had Pieve Torina as capital.
WORTH VISITING
Bolognola consists of three settlements
(Villas), set up by three famous
noble Ghibelline families expelled
from Bologna in the 13 th
century: Bentivoglio, Pepoli and
Malvezzi; the three units, composing
the municipality, were named
after the three families, but they are
also called, Villa da Piedi, Villa di
Mezzo and Villa da Capo, respectively.
In Villa da Piedi you can find
the Church of St. Nicolò, containing
an organ of the 18 th century, the
Palazzo Primavera of the 17 th century,
with frescoes, dating from
that time, ruins of the Church of St.
Maria a Piè del Sasso and the old
Mill. In Villa di Mezzo is preserved
a Rosary Madonna, painted by
Giulio Vergari Amandola in 1519;
of great interest are also the remains
of the Da Varano Castle,
with walls and keeps, dated back to
the 13 th century, and the Town Hall.
In Villa da Capo you can see the
Church of St. Maria delle Grazie
with Baroque frescoes of the 15 th
century and an organ of the 18 th
century. From the Edicola Cruciani,
a shrine, dating from the half

of the 15 th century, comes an important
fresco representing the
Madonna with Child and Saints,
attributed to Girolamo di Giovanni
from Camerino and now preserved
at the Picture Gallery in Camerino.

There are several hypothesis regarding
the origin of the name: according
to some opinions the term
derives from the adjective bonus in
relation to waters good quality,
land fertility and pastures richness,
according to others it derives from
Bona, an Umbro-Celtic divinity.

Local specialities are: cheese, salami,
honey, cakes and fruits of the
forest and undergrowth (mushrooms,
chestnuts, strawberries,
raspberries, blackberries, and so
on).

Bolognola offers many opportunities
for sport lovers: ski practisers
can enjoy its seven lifts, furthermore,
you can hike, go on mountain
bike, play soccer, tennis, Bocce
and enjoy walking or horse
trekking excursions up to 2000m in
height.

Bolognola is the highest town in
the Marche and its territory belongs
the of Camerino Mountain
Community (Comunità Montana
di Camerino) and its municipal territory
is totally included in the
Sibillini Mountains National Park.

There are numerous floristic presences
of high naturalistic interest:
the gentian, the pearl oysters and
various kinds of orchids. You can
enjoy wonderful walks along the
following natural itineraries: Valle
dell’Acquasanta, Fonte dell’Aquila,
Valle del Fargno, Pizzo
tre Vescovi, Fonte dell’Efre, Fonte
delle Bassette, Macchia Tonda,
Sentiero Pineta per la Maddalena.
