MOUNTAIN DEWS
The settlement of Monteleone
existed already at the time of
Faleria and was originally divided
into two different villages:
Monte Legumi e Torre
de’ Casoli. In 533 Euterio, the
King of the Longobards attacked
Faleria and occupied
Monte Legumi. Torre de’ Casoli
withstood a 12-years-siege
under the command of certain
Leone, instead. To leave the
memory of his value to posterity,
the name of the new-established
Municipality was subsequently
changed from Torre
de’ Casoli into Monteleone.
WORTH VISITING
Monteleone is a small village,
sited on a rocky spur between
Ete Vivo River and Lubrico
stream. The Town Hall contains
two small wooden paintings
by Crivelli’s School, representing
a Madonna and a St.
Giovanni. The Romanesque
gate and an octagonal keep
(13 th - 15 th centuries), serving
as bell tower for the parish
Church of St. Giovanni Battista
have been part of the original
medieval fortress. The
Church of the Crucifix, or
Madonna della Misericordia,
shows Romanesque elements
and frescoes, among which is a
Last Judgement of 1548, attributed
to Vincenzo Pagani. In
Piazza Umberto I stands the
Church of St. Marone, built in
the 16 th century on the foundations
of earlier Romanesque
buildings.
WORTH TASTING
You will be possibly enjoy local
restaurants more than the
village itself… The most prestigious
fruit of this land is “truffle”,
called “kitchen diamond”
by experts.
SOMETHING TO DO
There are some multi-purpose
sports grounds.
WORTH DISCOVERING
The environs of Monteleone
are very suitable to enjoy historical
and naturalistic routes in
the woody mounts of Ascoli
hinterland.
