Poggio San Vicino owes its origins
to the Romans, who built a
fortified outpost, named Podium
Ficanum, at the foot of the
Mount Sitria; over the years the
name of the place turned into
Ficano. In the early centuries
after the year 1000 it was part
of the possessions of Abbey of
Val di Castro, and passed later
to the District of Apiro. Since
1346 the place was subjected to
the supervision of Smeducci,
Lords of San Severino. It became
a possession of the Papal
States and, after being reunified
to the Italian State, it was part
of Apiro from 1929 to 1948,
until it returned later to its administrative
autonomy back.
WORTH VISITING
Worth visiting is the historic
Tower of the ancient castle, recently
restored and located on
the highest point of Poggio.
The parish Church of St. Maria
Assunta, built between 1876
and 1888, has a brick facade
and pink gravel sides; inside
you can see a beautiful wooden
Crucifix of Florentine art, dated
back to the 16 th century; a
painting of the Madonna Enthroned
with Saints, and a mural
painting representing the
Virgin Mary. In the sacristy
you can find some paintings of
the 17 th and 18 th centuries, together
with different vestments.
Worth visiting is also
the Church of SS. Giovanni
Evangelista and Battista, the
exterior of which is enriched
by a small bell tower, while the
interior contains important
frescoes, made by the School
of San Severino, that the local
tradition attributes to
Bernardino di Mariotto. Worth
seeing is also the rural Churches
of St. Rocco in the hamlet
Palace, the Church of St. Maria
delle Nevi in the hamlet Serronchia
and the Church of Madonna
del Carmine in the hamlet
Cordivino.
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are: honey,
handmade pasta, wine, pecorino
cheese, mushrooms, black
truffles, sausages, including
“ciauscolo”, excellent virgin
olive oil, cakes (the ringshaped
cake, the Easter snake,
the so called “cavallucci”).
SOMETHING TO DO
The following sport facilities
are available: a tennis court, a
soccer field, outdoor Bocce
rinks and a paragliding school
WORTH DISCOVERING
The village of Poggio, located
on the ridge of the hills that surround
the Mount San Vicino, is
part of the San Vicino Mountain
Community (Comunità
Montana del San Vicino), characterized
by interesting naturalistic
and landscape beauties.
Worth seeing is the green area
of the public park “La Torre”.
The place is the starting point
for fascinating excursions on
foot, horseback or by mountain

of the area. Worth remembering
is that one, who allows you
to reach the beautiful Abbey of
Val di Castro, monastery
founded in 1006 by St. Romualdo,
and those ones, that
lead to the lake of Cingoli, to
the Abbey of Sant’ Urbano and
Pian dell’ Elmo.
