Built over a previous Roman
settlement, the village Campus
Fullonum (dyers’ field), developed
in the Early Middle Ages
around the Benedictine Abbey
of St. Bartolomeo. From 1219
to 1342 was under the rule of
the Bishops of Fermo, until it
was finally appropriated by the
Popedom.
WORTH VISITING
The Greek-cross-plan Abbey
Church of St. Bartolomeo (19 th
century) contains valuable
Fontana’s frescoes; outside the
Church are remains of the vegetable
garden of the original
11 th century building. The
Church of SS. Crucifix, in the
hamlet Santa Maria dates back
to the 16 th century. In the
Church of St. Patrizio you can
see other Fontana’s frescoes.
In the historic centre, within the
castle walls, you can visit the
Bell Tower (12 th century), the
Keep of Porta Marina, Porta
da Sole and Porta da Bora
(original town gates). Of particular
interest is also the
Church of St. Maria, sited in
the hamlet Ponte Nina. In the
country side is a 16 th century
fortified building, called la
Castagna, which originally
served as shooting lodge.

The Municipality is famous for
its old tradition gastronomic
tradition: “maccheroncini”;
historically considered a noble

recipe, maccheroncini are different
from other hand made
pasta recipes, as the recipe
strictly requires that flour has to
be worked with eggs only: 10
eggs each kilo flour. Kneading
requires special skill and
strength, because the dough
sheet must be light and porous,
in order to be cut into very fine
strings. Maccheroncini have to
cook very quick and can be eaten
in soup or with sauce, with
or without tomato.
WORTH TASTING
Apart from its famous maccheroncini,
we recommend:
virgin olive oil, traditional
sausages like the famous ciauscolo,
certified wines like Rosso
Piceno and Falerio doc, cakes
(ciambella strozzose, frustingo,
Christmas pastry called
“Pizza di Natale”).

The following sport facilities
are available: multi-purpose
gym, a tennis court, a five-aside
football ground and a multi-purpose
sports field.

merging point of sea, country
and hilly environments; in the
