MOUNTAIN DEWS
Massignano (Massa Aniane)
was a suburb of the ancient Roman
town of Cupra. In the 13 th
century the town was subjected
to Fermo, but its geographical
position made it constantly
longed for by Ascoli Piceno.
In 1532 it was conquered by
Ascoli and, from that time till
the 18 th century, it was under
the Papal States.
WORTH VISITING
At the entrance of the village
you can find the neoclassical
Church of Misericordia, built
in the 19 th century. In the medieval
Old Town, you can see
the Civic Tower (1572), serving
as bell tower already for the old
Church of the Monastery, the
Town Hall, once Augustinian
Monastery, and the Church of
St. Giacomo Maggiore (18 th
century). Next to the Church
there’s the Parish Museum of
Sacred Art, which preserves
different art works, including a
painting of a Praying Madonna
with Child of the 15 th century
by Vittore Crivelli.
In the historic centre you can
also find lots of ancient noble
palaces. In the hamlet Villa
Santi is the Abbey of SS. Felice
and Adaucto, rebuilt in the 17 th
century and keeping the Romanesque
apse of the 10 th century.
WORTH TASTING
Among its local products we
have to remember: meat, traditional
sausages, pecorino
MASSIGNANO
cheese, extra-virgin olive oil,
handmade pasta (maccheroncini),
d.o.c. wines Rosso Piceno
and Falerio. Worth tasting are
its delicious stuffed olives.
