During the last period of the
Western Roman Empire, Camporotondo
was a legally independent
agricultural centre. After
the fall of the Empire in
1147, in the early Middle Ages,
it was turned into a Castrum
(small town surrounded by
walls) and into a stronghold for
the defence of San Ginesio by
the Da Varano family. The special
autonomy enjoyed by
Camporotondo is confirmed by
its statutes, dated 1322-1366,
which are considered among
the oldest ones of central Italy.
In the 16 th century Camporotondo
was annexed to the
Church States, however it
maintained its own statutes and
privileges.
WORTH VISITING
Worth visiting are the restored
ancient castle walls and the 14 th
century “Portarella”, the medieval
town gate. In the Church
of St. Marco you can see a
Rosary Madonna with Saints of
the 16 th century, a Madonna
with Child and Saints of the
17 th century and the Trinity and
Saints, dating from the 17 th
century. Interesting is the Convent
of Colfano, where you can
find, among other works, a
Madonna Enthroned with
Saints (1490) and a Crucifixion
with Virgin and Saints by Nobile
da Lucca. The Church of
St. Maria di Garufo preserves
an important fresco representing
the Madonna Enthroned
with Child, dating from the 15 th
century, attributed to Paolo da
Visso. The Town Hall has been
recently restored.
SOMETHING MORE TO
DISCOVER
The name Camporotondo
seems to derive from the name
of a medieval landlord or, according
to a more likely option
the name recalls the circular
shape of the village. The specification
of “Fiastrone”, referring
to the stream that runs
across the town, was added in
1863.
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are: virgin
olive oil, vincotto (literally
cooked wine), wine Rosso Piceno
doc., salami, cheese, pasta
(tagliatelle, cappelletti and
the famous “vincisgrassi”),
lamb, Christmas and Easter
pizzas, fruits of the forest.
SOMETHING TO DO
The following sport facilities
are available: a soccer field and
a multi-purpose gym (where
you can play tennis, volleyball
and football).
WORTH DISCOVERING
Camporotondo belongs to the
district of the Monti Azzurri
Mountain Community (Comunità
Montana dei Monti Azzurri).
From the town walls, towards
north-west, you can enjoy
a wonderful panorama
from the Fiastrone Valley with
its unique and beautiful land-
