MOUNTAIN DEWS
The village probably originated
in the Early Middle Ages,
founded by Longobards. The
hill where the village is located
must had been covered by a
thick forest, which was cut
down, as the etymology of the
name seems to confirm (Rasa
area later Rosora). The tight
connection of Rosora with the
powerful Abbey of St. Elena
during the feudal time is
recorded in a document of
1180, mentioning Paganello
de Rosora, an important Rosora
townsman as Abbey’s protector.
By the second half of
the 13 th century the village
Rosora is already a free Municipality,
though it belonged
to the country side (contado) of
Jesi. Due to its fidelity to Jesi,
Rosora was endowed with the
title of fidelis and was allowed
to provide its coat of arms with
the same crowned lion rampant.
From 1926 until 1946
formed the Municipality of
Rosora-Mergo, together with
Mergo; in 1946 Rosora obtained
its administrative independence
back.
WORTH VISITING
The echelon town framework
is very interesting; it’s characterized
by roomy space between
the buildings, arranged
in rows and the ring walls.
Fragments of the Ring walls
(13 th - 15 th century), the gate
with the original hinges, a semi-circular
tower with sheer
basement and a passage under-
ROSORA
neath the ring walls, with barrel
vault resting on round arches
are the sole traces of the original
Castle. In the historic centre
of the village is the rich parish
Church of St. Michele, erected
in the 18 th century on a previously
existing Romanesque
Church, containing, among
other well preserved items, a
wooden Crucifix of the 17 th
century, created by Pier
Domenico Nofroschi, considered
as miraculous, as well as a
notable painting representing
St. Giovannino, generally attributed
to the painter Adrea
from Jesi.
SOMETHING MORE TO
DISCOVER
The hamlet Tesenaria (today
Tassanare or Croce del Moro)
is famous for a wooden cross:
according to a very sad legend
the “Moro” of the aristocratic
family of Genga was hanged
on it.
WORTH TASTING
Among the local specialities
we recommend salami and
hams, cheeses and oil; wine
lovers cannot miss tasting the
excellent Verdicchio, produced
by lots of little local winegrowers.
SOMETHING TO DO
The location of the village allows
an amazing panoramic
view sweeping away from
Mount Catria to the Sibillini
Mountains and the Adriatic
the territory is a perfect place to
spend summer holidays. Soccer
fields, tennis courts and a
Boules (Bocce) rink are available
for fitness fans.
WORTH DISCOVERING
Enjoy the naturalistic Route of
Granchio Nero, winding along
the Fosso di Rosora (Rosora
Ditch, also called Fosso delle
Macinare), characterized by
the presence of river crabs
(black crab); the rich flora and
fauna of the region include
beech martens, weasels, badgers,
dormouses, birds of preys,
forest trees and a nice cyclamen
brushwood. Walking
along the road to the hamlet
San Giovanni you will appreciate
several century-old oaks,
and Pliocene sea deposits containing
fossil Gastropoda and
Lamellibranchia.
DON’T MISS OUT
