At Roman times it might have
been a vicus or pagus of Falerio
and a post stage on the road that
connected the town to Rome.
With the spread of Christianity,
the cult of Mars, God of war, it
was replaced by that one of the
Archangel Michele, whose image
appears on the municipal
coat of arms. The first church
dedicated to the Angel was
probably built on a temple dedicated
to Mars; and the village
got the modern name of
Sant’Angelo. The first residential
settlement developed
around the church. It gradually
expanded till it reached a certain
importance at the time of the
Longobards. In 1245 the most
famous citizen of Sant’Angelo
in Pontano was born: St. Nicola
da Tolentino, named after the
town, where he died in 1305.
Sant’Angelo was proclaimed
“free Municipality” in 1263, but
its freedom lasted only few
years, since it passed first under
the jurisdiction of the powerful
Municipality of Fermo, then under
the Da Varano family from
Camerino, until it finally came
back under the State of Fermo,
joining its following history.
With the Unification of Italy, after
the abolition of the province
of Fermo, the town was annexed
to the Province of Macerata
with Royal Decree dated
22 nd December 1860.
WORTH VISITING
Worth visiting is the Municipal
Theatre N. A. Angeletti and the
Church of St. Salvatore (12 th
century), with a crypt and a 14 th
century bell tower. The Church
of St. Michele Arcangelo preserves
interesting works of art.
The Castle was built at the end
of the fourteenth century. The
Civic Tower dates back to the
14 th century; the Church of St.
Nicola was built in the 13 th century:
inside you can see some
frescoes by Domenico Malpiedi,
several important paintings
and a beautiful wooden choir.
Worth seeing is also the St.
Nicola’s birth house. The rural
Church of St. Martino and the
Church of Madonna delle
Pietre, located in the hamlet
Salti, are very typical. Pleasant
are alleys and small squares
with typical open brickwork.

From everywhere in the town
you can enjoy a wonderful
panoramic view, including the
chain of the Sibillini Mountains
to the west and the hills
sloping down towards the sea
to the east.
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are: virgin
olive oil, ciauscolo, honey,
cheese, handmade pasta (tagliatelle,
cappelletti and the famous
vincisgrassi), cakes
(Christmas and Easter pizzas
and Carnival scroccafusi).

Sant’Angelo is situated on a
hill between Ete Morto Valley
and the Tenna valley, in a beautiful
panoramic position; it belongs
to the Monti Azzurri
Mountain Community (Comunità
Montana dei Monti Azzurri),
a territory rich in history,
culture, art and natural beauties.

mountain bike or on horseback.
