MOUNTAIN DEWS
Tradition relates the existence
of an ancient Roman
town called Lubacaria, destroyed
by the Gothic King
Alaric (according to some
opinions ruins of the settlement
are in the hamlet Cerbara).
Anew village was built
on the near hill, overlooking
the Metauro River and that’s
the place, that the modern village
of Piagge (Latin Platea)
still occupies. From 777 to
1156 it was a property of the
Abbey of St. Paterniano of
Fano. In 1227 the Castle was
built over new, due to its bad
conditions.
Dominated by Lorenzo de
Medici, was transferred to the
Della Rovere family from
1517 until 1631, when it was
made over to the Popedom together
with the Dukedom of
Urbino.
WORTH VISITING
Evidence of the ancient history
of the village is a hypogeal
tomb. Also to be seen is the
medieval Castle, with ring
walls and a slender Torre
dell’Orologio (Clock- tower),
as well as the 19 th century
parish Church of St. Lucia,
containing a Last Supper
painting, attributed to Giovanni
Francesco Guerrieri
and a painting dated 1768,
representing the Crucifixion,
by Carlo Magini from Fano.
In the hamlet Cerbara is the
Church of St. Ubaldo, owned
by the princely Albani family.
SOMETHING MORE TO
DISCOVER
Besome weaving is still practised,
according to the original
rural tradition.
WORTH TASTING
Specialities are Sangiovese
wine, virgin olive oil, passatelli,
tagliatelle, ravioli, gnocchi,
maltagliati, pizza and salted
cakes (pizza) with cheese.
SOMETHING TO DO
Boules (Italian Bocce) competitions
are organised very often
in the village, that is the scene
of a walking race, called “Di
Lubacaria”, an amateur bike
race, as well five-a-side football
competitions in summer.
WORTH DISCOVERING
In the surrounding country side
it is possible to see a number of
former farm houses, in which
the rural traditional building
character of 19 th and 20 th centuries
is preserved. Several fascinating
routes of historical
and naturalistic interest are
available. We suggest a walk
along the town walls; here it is
possible to enjoy a fascinating
panoramic view sleeping from
the Adriatic sea to the Furlo
Gorge.
DON’T MISS OUT
Festa di Carnevale (Carnival) -
