Peglio lies amid the upper valley
of Metauro River, in a
dominant position, allowing a
unrivalled panoramic view
sweeping away from Mount
Carpegna to Alpe della Luna,
from Mount Nerone to Mount
Catria and the town of Urbino.
The village boasts old Longobard
origins; mention of it, as
Castrum Pileum (due to its
frame work, reminding a
pileum, military hat) is already
available in 1232. Occupied
by Cardinal Albornoz, it became
a property of the Montefeltro
family, who employed
Francesco di Giorgio Martini
with the restoration of the castle
walls. In 1631 Peglio became
a Church territory, together
with the Dukedom of
Urbino. It was recognised a
Municipality straight after the
Unification of Italy; Peglio
was brought together with Urbania
during the Fascist period,
but it got its independence
back, following the Liberation
in 1945.
WORTH VISITING
Absolutely recommended is
the 13 th century Tower of
Girone, the bell of which
shows interesting inscriptions
with Gothic characters. The
Baroque Parish Church of St.
Fortunato contains a Castel
Durante’s terracotta, showing
a Via Crucis of the 17 th century.
Two crypts, dating from
Longobard times have been
recently discovered.

DISCOVER
During the Christmas time
each town borough uses to
mounts traditional crib scenes
in the most picturesque spots of
the village. At the foot of the
Metauro is a cippo (memorial
stone), celebrating the Garibaldi’s
soldiers killed in 1849 during
a fight against the Austrian
troops; not far away is a Monumento
al Corpo di Liberazione
(Memorial to the Liberation
troops), erected to the design of
Aligi Sassu, to celebrate the
Gothic Line battlefields.
WORTH TASTING
Specialties of the upper Metauro
Valley, including truffle and
mushrooms, handmade pasta,
crostoli with local ham and
salami variety and wild green
vegetables.
SOMETHING TO DO
The following sport facilities
are available in the hamlet San
Donnino: soccer field, two
Boules (Italian Bocce) rinks, a
tennis court, a multi-purpose
sports centre.
WORTH DISCOVERING
The Casa del Vicario (Vicar’s
house) is of great interest, due
to its panoramic position; Also
the Civic Tower, amid the nature,
is very fascinating.
Enjoy a walk in the Monte
Sassone and Ca’ Romanici
pinewoods, as well as the interesting
walking, mountain-bike

and horse trekking routes
along the Apsa stream, winding
across field paths, country
lanes and gravel streets. The
flora includes oak woods and
conifer reforestation areas. The
local fauna is characterized by
diurnal birds of pray (buzzards
and kestrels), green woodpeckers,
roe deer and foxes.
Interesting view spots like a
charming Metauro water fall,
geological strata, historic
buildings (historic Village
(Borgo) of Collelungo, earlier
Church of St. Mustiola, Sanctuary
of Battaglia) are also
worth mentioning.
