PONZANO DI FERMO
In the 7 th century Ponzano was
under the rule of the Farfa
Abbey: the monks moved there
and built a Church, dedicated
to St. Maria Mater Domini. In
1214 the Castle was under the
authority of Fermo, but in the
period between 1416 and 1443
was repeatedly plundered by
the Malatesta family and by
Alessandro Sforza. In 1570
Pope Pius V divided Ponzano
from Fermo and set it up as a
free Municipality.
WORTH VISITING
In the walled around historic
centre it is possible to appreciate
the Porta d’accesso (Town
Gate) with an embattled keep
of the 15 th century and a threearchways
arcade. The parish
Church of St. Maria a “Pede
Pontis”, rebuilt in 1792, contains
numerous masterpieces,
like a 17 th century Rosary
Madonna, an altorilievo showing
a Madonna with Child, example
of Tuscan art of the 16 th
century and an astylar Cross of
1437. Outside the historic centre
stands the monumental
Church of “Santa Maria Mater
Domini” (or Church of St.
Marco), originally erected in
the 7 th century, but rebuilt between
the 11 th and 12 th centuries,
splendid example of Romanesque
style, with Romanesque
lowered tripartite facade
and a stout bell tower (rebuilt
in the 17 th century), probably
a defence element, typical
of the Farfensi churches; an im-
portant and very popular fair,
dedicated to St. Marco, takes
place each year near the church.
In the hamlet Torchiaro is the
Church of Ss. Simone and Giuda,
built again in 1827 by the
architect Alessandro Vassalli.
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are: tagliatelle
with wild boar ragùsauce,
pappardelle with hare
ragù-sauce and beans with pork
rinds.
SOMETHING TO DO
The following sport facilities
are available: a soccer field,
two five-a-side football
grounds and a volleyball
ground.
WORTH DISCOVERING
Ponzano is a medieval village
perched on a hilltop, about 15
km from the sea and not far
away from the Sibillini Mountains.
In the village is a municipal
public garden.
The territory offers walking
and mountain-bike itineraries
across the charming hills and
the surrounding country side.
