MOUNTAIN DEWS
Montottone was initially a very
important Castle in the territory
of Fermo, laid out between
the 10 th and the 11 th century by
Attone, Duke of Atri, hence
Mons Actonis. In 1537 it became
the chief town of the Papal
State of Agro Piceno, including
all castles, that were
under the rule of Fermo at that
time. During about 10 years
governors had their residence
in Montottone.
WORTH VISITING
In the historic centre it is possible
to see the Castle walls with
medieval keep and the Porta
Marina (Castle gate); on the
main square stands the Church
of St. Pietro (17 th - 18 th century),
containing a Vincenzo
Paci’s organ of 1877; worth
mentioning is the Neoclassical
façade of Palazzo Amici (19 th
century). Along the corso
(main street) is the Church of
St. Maria Ausiliatrice, retaining
a painting, attributed to
Vincenzo Pagani. Close to the
Church you can find a medieval
cistern. Of great interest
are also the Church of St. Salvatore
(15 th - 17 th centuries),
the Church of Madonna delle
Grazie (14 th - 17 th centuries)
holding a valuable fresco, dating
from the 15 th century; the
Church and the Convent of St.
Francesco, with Gothic-Romanesque
portal and late
Baroque interior with stuccoes
and gilts. It holds many artworks,
like a 18 th century
MONTOTTONE
wood carved choir, a Pietro da
Rimini’s fresco of 1333 (it’s
the only work of the artist, that
he ever dated) and a Maratta’s
painting. Don’t miss visiting
the Ceramics and Earthenware
Museum.
