Historians relate the existence
of Sassofeltrio, originally
called Serra del sasso, already
in 756 after Christ and its donation
by Pippin, King of the
Franks, to the Blessed Pietro,
marking the appropriation of
the Castle by the Popedom.
Other records, dated 962, relate
that the German Emperor Otto
gave Ulderico of Carpegna the
feud Sassum together with other
neighbouring castles. Documents
of 1232 and 1311 refer to
the Castrum Saxi as a possession
of the Rimini Signoria.
Being a long contested territory
between the Malatesta and
the Montefeltro families, it was
conquered by Captain Giacomo
Piccinino for the Dukes of
Urbino.
Especially under the rule of
Federico of Montefeltro, the
Rocca was erected to the design
of the Senese architect
Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
Afterwards, the village passed
under the rule of the Church
again.
WORTH VISITING
The village has preserved its
medieval framework with
overhanging defence walls,
testifying its illustrious past. Its
natural setting, a hilly landscape,
is absolutely fascinating
and evocative itself. The Rocca
Feltresca, designed by Francesco
di Giorgio Martini, was
completely ruined in 1819 ands
still today only a few remains
can be seen.

The village, perched atop a
rocky spur, in a chalk pits area.

Amongst the typical products
we recommend piadina, tagliatelle
and passatelli.
WORTH DISCOVERING
Of great interest is the typical
Casa Pasquali.
In the hamlet Valle Sant’Anastasio,
near Sassofeltrio, is a
sulphurous and alkaline water
source.
