The earliest reference to the
settlement dates 1140, relating
the donation made by Duke
Guarnieri to the Bishop of Fossombrone.
According to the
confederation deed of 1207 between
Fano and Rimini, where
it’s mentioned as Insula Planensium,
Isola del Piano must
have been an important village
at the time. The Ghibelline
Castle was burnt out in 1284 by
Riminese soldiers, supporting
the Guelphic assault (a gothic
capital representing the mentioned
historical event can be
seen in the Municipal Theatre).
Urbino ruled over the village
until 1574; afterwards it was
donated as feudal endowment
from Duke Guidolbaldo II to
the Counts Castiglioni, the famous
Mantua family, from
which Baldassarre Castiglioni,
the author of Il Cortigiano also
comes from.
WORTH VISITING
Built on the ruins of the previous
Castello dell’Isola stands
the historic Palazzo dei Castiglioni,
with the well preserved
gate of the 16 th century. In the
Church of the Girolamini
monks it is possible to appreciate
three valuable paintings. Of
particular interest is the former
Church of the Annunziata, with
Renaissance portal, that has
been recently restored and
serves as Auditorium. It contains
frescos of the 15 th and the
16 th centuries, among which a
Madonna with Child, attrib-
uted to Giovanni Santi, Raffaello’s
father. Don’t miss visiting
the Museum “Sulle tracce
dei nostri padri”, ethnografic
museum, contributing to go
through the history of the society
and the rural tradition,
housed in the former Monastery
of Montebello, old residence
of the Girolamini
monks, amid the unspoiled nature
of the Monti delle Cesane.

DISCOVER
The municipal territory has
been one of the first Italian areas,
where biological agriculture
has been implemented
(since the 70s already); the local
production brand is a fact
within the national frontiers
and it’s now distributed all over
Europe.
Traditional handicraft manufacturing
(especially calcareous
and sand stone-cutting,
lime-processing, quarrying
and processing of gypsum) is
still practiced.
WORTH TASTING
Notable production of cereals,
fresh vegetables and delicious
preserves.
WORTH DISCOVERING
The village lies flat downhill
the woody and charming Monti
delle Cesane, along the valley
of Rio Puto, a tributary of
the Metauro River, a few kilometres
away from the historic
Via Flaminia. It’s a suitable
