The village was probably
founded in the Early Middle
Ages, but the territory including
Frontino and other villages
of the Montefeltro has got prehistoric
origin. The victory of
Sentino (295 before Christ)
marks the beginning of the Roman
domination, evidenced by
the number of relevant archaeological
findings discovered in
the area. The Castle of San Sisto
and Frontino, belonging to
Massa Trabaria, were erected in
the 12 th century; Massa Trabaria
was tightly dependent on
the Popedom, as it provided
Rome with wood. The territory
is not far from the regions belonging
to the aristocratic families
Malatesta, Montefeltro and
Carpegna: for that reason famous
captains of the mentioned
families tried to occupy Frontino,
like for example Uguccione
della Faggiola, who laid waste
the town. Afterwards, it became
a possession of Federico
da Montefeltro, followed by a
period of government of Ottaviano
degli Ubaldini.
WORTH VISITING
The Church of SS. Pietro and
Paolo contains a painting of the
Baroccio’s school; the Franco
Assetto Museum, housing the
works that the painter donated
to the Municipality, is also
worth visiting.
Not far away is the charming
Franciscan Convent of Montefiorentino,
built in successive
stages starting in the 13 th centu-

ry. In it is the Chapel of Counts
Oliva (1484), a graceful Renaissance
squared room with a
valuable majolica tiled floor;
the walls of the Chapel contain
the tombs of Gianfrancesco
Oliva and his wife Marsibilia
Trinci; noteworthy are also an
altar-piece showing a Madonna
with Child and Saints by Giovanni
Santi, Raffaello’s father,
and two carved kneel-stools.
The Monastery of San Girolamo,
surrounded by centuryold
oaks, is not far away; created
in 1503, it has been the old
seat of the Girolamini monks
and has been recently restored.

DISCOVER
In the old village, that is still delimited
by towers and sound
walls is the impressive Palazzo
Malatesta; the cellars of the
palace are connected to a mill
(recently restored) through
long underground passages, so
that flour supplying could be
guaranteed during siege times.
WORTH TASTING
Notable variety of mushrooms,
white and black truffle, cheese,
beans, wild green vegetables,
typical cattle and mutton from
wild raised cows and sheep,
wild berries (especially blackberries,
used to make a delicious
jam).

field, tennis courts, volleyball
and basketball grounds, skating
rink and an indoor sports centre.
The outdoor theatre is used
for festivals and different
events.
WORTH DISCOVERING
The municipal territory lies in
the Sasso Simone and Simoncello
Regional Park; the town
is a perfect departure point for
walking, mountain bike or
horse trekking tours.
