SERRAPETRONA
Its origins date back to the prehistoric
period: Picene people at
first, than Romans and Longobards
resided in the territory of
Serrapetrona. Afterwards, it
was subjected to the Signoria of
the Da Varano family from
Camerino and was appropriated
later on by the Popedom, until it
became part of the Kingdom of
Italy in 1861.
WORTH VISITING
The Parish Church of St.
Francesco can boast a significant
polyptych by Lorenzo d’Alessandro;
on its walls you can
see numerous fragments of frescoes
from different eras. The
Church of St. Lorenzo in Castel
San Venanzo preserves a painting
of the 15 th century representing
Jesus on the Cross with Virgin
and Saints Maria Maddalena
and Giovanni. The
Church of St. Maria delle Grazie
in Serra is an ancient building,
enlarged during the 16 th century,
and it still preserves the small
door of the 13 th century: inside
you can find a painted niche with
a Madonna and Saints Giovanni
Battista and Sebastiano by
Lorenzo d’Alessandro. Worth
remembering are the Historical
Archives and the Oil Museum,
located in the old Mill of the Village;
worth seeing are also the
Picture Gallery of Contemporary
Sacred Art hosted in the
Galleria del Caburro (Caburro
Tunnel) and the Museum dell’uomo
(Museum of Man) in the
old Watch-Tower.

DISCOVER
The territory is famous for the
production of the Vernaccia, a
sparkling ruby-red wine, considered
the jewel of the oenology
of the Marche Region. In
1971 it obtained the Registered
Designation of Origin (Denominazione
di Origine Controllata;
in 2003 it received the
Registered and certified Designation
of Origin (Denominazione
di Origine controllata e
Garantita). The Vernaccia is
produced in two versions: “dry”
and “sweet.” The “dry” version
is excellent between meals, but
also served with barbecue and
meat; the “sweet” one is suggested
with desserts and pastries.
You can taste it at the temperature
of 12-14 degrees. Uncork
just before drinking!
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are: the famous
Vernaccia, virgin olive
oil Coroncina, traditional
sausages, included the
renowned “ciauscolo”, handmade
pasta, cakes (cookies
with anise, cookies with almond,
nougat, ciambelle - ringshape
patries with Vernaccia).

The following sport facilities
are available: indoor Buoles
(Italian Bocce) rinks, a tennis
court, a sports ground, a municipal
gym, a skating rink and an
horse-riding centre. Here you

skiing, canoeing and rowing on
the beautiful Lake of Caccamo.
WORTH DISCOVERING
Serrapetrona is located amid the
hilly landscape of Macerata; the
municipal territory is included
in the Monti Azzurri Mountain
Community (Comunità Montana
dei Monti Azzurri), a territory
rich in history, art and naturalistic
beauties. The wooded
areas are characterized by oaks,
elm-trees, wild chestnuts, oaks
and smoke-trees, typical plant
that gives the Cesolone Valley
its peculiar red hue; the plant
was very required in the past,
because of its utility for tanning.
The municipality organises historical-cultural
excursions at
the discovery of churches and
museums of the territory upon
booking, as well as gourmet
conventions, including visits of
the wine industries, that produce
the famous “Vernaccia”.
