The village originated around
the year 1061, when the
Malugero Morico, son of the
Norman count Dragone D’Altavilla,
founded the Castles of
Monsampietro and Sant’Elpidio
Morico. From the 9 th to
the 13 th century both castles
were annexed to the powerful
Abbey of Farfa. In 1316 they
passed under the rule of Fermo,
until the Napoleonic period.
After the Unification of Italy,
Sant’Elpidio Morico and Monsampietro
were incorporated
into one Municipality.
WORTH VISITING
Of great value are the ruins of
the Medieval castle and the
polygonal Tower of the 14 th
and 15 th centuries. The 18 th
century Church of St. Francesco
contains a painting of the
Venetian school, dated from
the 17 th century and an astylar
cross of the 16 th century. In the
Church of St. Michele Arcangelo
(17 th century), sited in the
hamlet S. Elpidio Morico, is a
three-panels-polyptych of
1496, representing a Madonna
with Child and Saints by
Vittore Crivelli. The Romanesque
Church of St. Paolo
(11 th century), National monument,
was built over a pagan
temple. Of great interest are
also the parish Church of SS.
Pietro and Antonio, built in
17 th century, and the Church
of the Madonna del Carmine.
Worth visiting is also the Town
Hall, containing some valu-
able paintings and a 16 th century
triptych.
WORTH TASTING
Amongst local specialities we
recommend: virgin olive oil,
traditional sausages and
salamis, hand made past
recipes (tagliatelle and vincisgrassi),
honey, vincotto (literally
cooked wine) and cakes
(calcione, frustringo, pizza
with figs).
SOMETHING TO DO
The following sport facilities
are available: multi-purpose
sports centre, a soccer field and
an indoor boules (Italian bocce)
rinks centre.
WORTH DISCOVERING
Monsampietro stands on a hilltop
overlooking the Ete Vivo
Valley, about 27 kilometres
from the sea; in the village is a
municipal playground for children.
It’s a suitable area for naturalistic
excursions, like the walking
or mountain-bike itineraries
along the Ete Vivo and Indaco
streams.
