A villa with annexed small
church, called San Marcello al
Poggio, located on the top of a
hill gave the name to the castle,
that rose later on not far way.
Considering the archaeological
findings discovered in the area,
dating from prehistoric to Roman
time, as well as from early
Christian to Romanesque time,
the castle originated in the remote
past. Findings like dagger
blades, fibulas, armours, earthenware
and the discovery of a
Picene worrior’s tomb are evidences
of the human presence
in the area since the 6 th century
before Christ.
The village, always tightly
linked to Jesi was likely provided
with a fortification structure
already in 1261, when it
was known as Castello di Poggio
San Marcello. In 1503 the
castle walls were strengthened
with the addiction of the bastions,
designed by Domenico
di Giovanni from Bellinzona.
In 1926 Poggio San Marcello
lost its autonomy and was assembled
with Castelplanio, but
in 1947 the village got its administrative
independence
back again.
WORTH VISITING
The village is composed by
three parallel main streets
crossed perpendicularly by
narrow lanes, creating a charming
and evocative atmosphere.
Porta of St. Nicola of 1455 is
the only fragment of the old
Castle walls that is still to ap-
preciate. Also to be seen are the
17 th century Porta del Soccorso
and the Parish Church of St.
Nicola, erected by the middle
of the 18 th century, containing
a painting by Ercole Ramazzini
from Arcevia and a Madonna
Enthroned by Antonino Sarti
from Jesi. Not far from the
mentioned monuments you can
find the gothic crypt belonging
to the old Parish Church. Together
with the Church of St.
Maria del Monte of the 14 th
century and the Church of St.
Marcello al Poggio, the Sanctuary
of the Madonna del Soccorso,
built near the town gate
in 1646, is also worth visiting.
People are very devoted to the
Sanctuary, due to the presence
of the wood carving representing
a Madonna Enthroned with
Child of 1608, sited in the high
altar of the Sanctuary.
SOMETHING MORE TO
DISCOVER
During the time between the
first and the second world wars,
the most people’s livelihood
was provided by the Libanori
Brothers’ Fornace (Brickyard),
flourishing business that
contributed to limit emigration
from the Hinterland to the
Coast, affecting the most villages,
including Poggio San
Marcello.

WORTH DISCOVERING
Thanks to its location in the
Esino Mid-Valley the territory
is a suitable area to enjoy walking,
mountain-bike and horse
trekking itineraries. It’s the perfect
place to appreciate not only
the beautiful sweet hilly
landscape with typical farmer
buildings spread around, but also
charming spots of great
artistic and historical value,
due to the variety of the old villages,
that occupy the hilltops.
