MOUNTAIN DEWS
Castel Colonna is a small, but
picturesque village, lying on a
natural spur, whose origin is
still uncertain; the most likely
possibility among several ones
is that it was founded by people
escaping from the old town
of Suasa, destroyed by Alaric
in 409.
Between the 13 th and the 15 th
century the whole territory of
Castel Colonna belonged to
the Benedictine Monks of
Fonte Avellana, who had several
buildings and stores in the
area. Afterwards, it became
property of the Dukedom of
Urbino and in 1631 it was
made over to the Popedom.
WORTH VISITING
The most characteristic element
of this Borgo is the city
gate with brick rampart, dating
from the 13 th century, known
as Torre Vittoria Colonna; of
particular interest are also the
ring walls, erected in the 13 th
century, that maintain in their
oldest part a bank with parapet
and bracket cornice, though
undergoing later modifications.
The Church of St. Mauro
Abate is also worth visiting.
SOMETHING MORE TO
DISCOVER
Until 1921 Castel Colonna
was known as the Tomb of
Senigallia. The original builtup
area leans on a light slope,
delimited by the ship shaped
ring walls. Outside the original
borgo, in the suburb Croce, has
developed a new mainly residential
area.
WORTH TASTING
The excellent biological wine
is absolutely recommended.
The village will be soon obtaining
a designation for its most
typical product, the Frattula
Salami.
SOMETHING TO DO
Castelcolonna has got a park
with ponds suitable for fishing;
sport fans can also enjoy a multi-purpose
ground with sport
facilities.
WORTH DISCOVERING
In the hamlet Francavilla
stands the old Church of Misericordia,
with annexed parvis,
surrounded on two sites by a
blind archway building and delimited
by a gate. A beautiful
tree-lined avenue leads to the
church complex, which was
once a Camaldolese monastery.
To recommend also the track
into the thick vegetation characterising
the Fosso (ditch)
della Bruciata, close to the border
to Senigallia. The territory
offers lots of panoramic view
spots: particularly, in the Croce
area, over the hill of Montesaltarello
and Francavilla, in
the hamlet Consolazione and
along the road to Roncitelli.
