Located close to the Conca
River banks, lying on a spur of
tufaceous rock downhill the
Mount Faggiola, is Monte
Cerignone, composed by an
upper town, called Castello
and a lower town called Borgo.
Owned by the Carpegna family
in 962 already, it was transferred
to the Montefeltro family
and than to the Malatesta
family. After getting back to
the Montefeltro family by the
half of the 15 th century, the
Rocca, built in the 13 th century
for the first Counts of Montefeltro,
underwent consolidation
and enlargement works to
the design of Francesco di
Giorgio Martini on commission
of Duke Federico. Nowadays
the building is the seat of
the municipal Government.
WORTH VISITING
The original urban frame work
of the 15 th century is unaltered.
The town boasts a number of
monuments and works of art.
Worth visiting are the Castle,
the Renaissance Palazzo Begni,
that looks like an extension
of the outside walls of the Rocca,
the Church of St. Caterina,
erected in the 17 th century on
commission of the Order of the
Knights of Malta. Absolutely
to be seen is also the Church of
St. Maria del Soccorso, containing
an interesting painting
of Madonna enthroned and
two pictures attributed to
Bartolomeo Vivarini.
The Church of S. Biagio, the
Patron Saint of the village,
dates from the 17 th century: in
it are a Vivarini’s Ecce Homo
and a valuable Cross of the 12 th
century, that is said to have
been brought by the Crusaders,
coming back from the Holy
Land (the old Fiera di S. Croce
also celebrates the event). In
the Borgo is a 15 th century
small loggia indicating the
Casa dei Maffei, historic residence
of the Maffei family,
which Pope Clement XIV
comes from. The Conventino,
located in the hamlet Fonte
Buona, dates back to the end of
the 15 th century, when friar
Domenico Spadafora erected
there a very small convent to
retire with his fellow friars.
Blessed Domenico’s unaltered
mortal remains are now kept in
the Sanctuary of St. Maria in
Recluso, built in the 16 th century
over the ruins of a earlier
Juno temple.
WORTH TASTING
There are many specialities,
among which is the bustrengo
(traditional cake).
