Since the 9 th century Caldarola
has belonged to the Abbey of
St.Clemente in Casauria; it
joined Camerino in 1240. After
various and long war events, it
finally returned to the Popedom
in 1545. In 1799 the pontifical
domain was overthrown by the
French Revolution. After
Napoleon, the village came
back to the Church government
till 1861, when the region
Marche was annexed to Italian
Kingdom.
WORTH VISITING
It is a centre of great historical
and artistic interest, famous for
the presence of important and
significant traces of a remote
past in the outskirts. The key
feature of the village is the
Casle of Counts Pallotta,
which dominates the village
from the top of the Cuculo Hill.
The Palace of Cardinal Evangelista
Pallotta (16 th century),
today’s Town Hall, houses the
beautiful Stanza del Paradiso,
full of frescoes, and the Municipal
Painting Gallery. In the
basement of the palace you can
also visit the Museum of Esoterism
and the Resistance Museum.
The Castle Vestignano
(9 th - 10 th centuries) preserves
works of De Magistris and Nobile
da Lucca. The Sanctuary of
Maria SS. del Monte, dating
from the half of the 18 th century,
contains a painting representing
the Madonna with
Child among Saints and
clients. The significant Munici-

pal Theatre dates 1830. Worth
visiting is also the medieval
Castle Pievefavera.

DISCOVER
Caldarola owes probably its
name to the Latin word Calidarium,
which indicated the
room with warm water pool in
thermal baths; the area was
probably been rich in sulphur
waters.
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are: virgin
olive oil “Coroncina”, vincotto
(literally cooked wine), traditional
salami and sausages variety
(ciauscolo, pork neck salami,
salsiccia, ham), cheese,
pastries with anise biscuits,
Christmas and Easter pizzas,
ring-shaped cakes, honey, truffles,
pasta.

The following sport facilities
are available: a tennis court, an
indoor Boules (Bocce) rink
centre, a multi-purpose ground
and a municipal sports ground.
WORTH DISCOVERING
Caldarola belongs to the district
of the Monti Azzurri
Mountain Community (Comunità
Montana dei Monti Azzurri).
Within the town walls is a
park with century-old trees, including
a pine tree, planted on
the occasion of the visit of
Clement VIII. You can easily
reach the lake Caccamo (2,8

suitable for swimming and canoeing.
You can also enjoy historical-naturalistic
excursions
in the wonderful territory of the
Comunità Montana dei Monti
Azzurri, for example you can
visit the castles of Vestignano,
Pievefavera, Croce di Pievefavera,
Valcimarra.
