The village of Belforte, located
on the top of a steep hill, is a
centre rich in artistic evidences
and in environmental and landscape
attractions. In the high
Middle Ages the current territory
of Belforte was included in
the court of St. Gregorio in Travenano.
In 1205 it became part
of Camerino with the purpose
to oppose the expansion of Tolentino;
the following events
bounded Belforte to the inhabitants
of Tolentino first, then to
Camerino, until it finally
passed under the rule of the
Popedom in the 16 th century. It
still preserves its 14 th century
ring walls and its medieval urban
system with narrow steep
and winding roads.
WORTH VISITING
The noble historic Church of
St. Eustachio preserves an important
and valuable Giovanni
Boccati’s polyptych, dated
1468; the Church of St. Sebastiano
has a wonderful portal of
the 15 th century; in the Church
of St. Pietro Apostolo you can
see a processional copper
Cross in Byzantine style; in the
Church of St. Giovanni Battista
you can find interesting frescoes
of Andrea de Magistris,
dated 1558.

The name derives in part from
its harmonious appearance and
in part from its strategic position
on the Chienti Valley.

Local specialities are: virgin
olive oil, red wine Vernaccia
d.o.c., traditional sausages,
cheese, bread with nuts, dry
pastry (anise biscuits, pizza
cakes, ciambelle - ring-shaped
pastries), homemade pasta (tagliatelle
and the famous “vincisgrassi”).

In Belforte you can find a municipal
indoor Bocce rink centre,
a tennis court, a baseball
ground, a municipal sports
ground and a gym.

Nearby you can enjoy numerous
natural-environmental
trips, either on foot or by
mountain bike, in the paths or
woods of the territory of the
Monti Azzurri Mountain Community
(Comunità Montana
dei Monti Azzurri) .
