MONTE GIBERTO
Initially inhabited by Picene
people and Romans, the territory
of Monte Giberto became a
property of the Farfa Abbey,
until it passed under the rule of
Fermo in the 13 th century. Until
the establishment of the Kingdom
of Italy, the history of
Monte Giberto is tightly connected
with Fermo’s history.
WORTH VISITING
In the historic centre you can
see the ruins of the 14 th century
castle walls with four keeps
and the pointed-arch Gate, the
Church of St. Antonio (1742),
the Town Hall (13 th century)
and the parish Church of St.
Nicolò (18 th century), containing
numerous paintings, one of
which represents a Last Supper
created in 1602 by the Florence’s
School, a 18 th century
polychrome wood group,
carved by Gaetano Callido in
1797. Near the main square is
the Church of St. Giovanni Battista,
re-built in the 18 th century,
showing three paintings of
the 18 th century, different frescoes
and a Vincenzo Paci’s organ,
dated 1876. Outside the
Castle walls it is possible to visit
the Sanctuary of St. Maria
delle Grazie, worship place
and example of the local devotion
to the Virgin Mary, erected
by the Middle of the 18 th century
to the design of the architect
Giambattista Vassalli. Inside is
a display of 17 th century paintings,
a 14 th century marble
sculpture representing a Ma-
donna with Child, and a Angelo
Morettini’s organ, dated
1830. Also to be seen is the rural
Church of St. Lucia, erected
in the Hamlet Santa Lucia in
the 13 th century, but restored in
the 18 th century.
WORTH TASTING
Amongst the local specialities
we recommend: lu Pizzottu,
unrefined bread with maize
flour, raisins and dried figs; polenta
with different sauces
made with sausage (local salsiccia),
fish, wild game, dried
salt cod, pork rinds; Cacciannanze,
rustical pizza made of
flour, water, organic yeast and
salt.
SOMETHING TO DO
The following sport facilities
are available: a multi-purpose
sports centre and tennis courts.
WORTH DISCOVERING
Monte Giberto lies on the top
of a nice hill, offering an amazing
panoramic view; it’s about
15 km from the Adriatic Sea
and about 40 km away from the
Sibillini Mountains. In the village
is a beautiful pine wood.
The surrounding country side
is perfect to enjoy naturalistic
walking or mountain-bike
tours.
