The village of Castelleone di
Suasa rises on a hill, overlooking
the middle valley of the Cesano
River; the typical medieval
structure is still well preserved:
narrow streets delimited
by the ring walls. Castelleone
really flourished in the first half
of the 12 th century, when Livia
della Rovere, wife of Francesco
Maria II and last Duquesse of
Urbino had her residence there
for a while. Downhill the castle,
it is still possible to see the ancient
settlement of Suasa, a Roman
municipium, established
according to the Lex Flaminia
dated 232 before Christ.
Thanks to scrupulous excavation
a rich private house (domus),
belonging to the senatorial
family Coiedii, dating from
the 2 nd century after Christ was
found out, as the valuable mosaic
floors representing mythological
scenes, as well as the
rare examples of wall painting
in Pompeian style, the remains
of several statues and the big
quantity of every-day objects
prove.
WORTH VISITING
After carrying out the excavations
in the area of Pian Volpello,
the Regional Archaelogical
Park of Suasa has been created,
containing the ruins of a big amphitheatre,
including the cavea
and the underground passages,
as well as the forum, the old financial
heart of Roman towns
and the Coedii’s aristocratic domus,
mentioned before.
The findings coming from the
site are now collected in the Archaeological
Museum, housed
in the impressive Palazzo Della
Rovere. Also the former
Monastery of Minimi Friars, today
seat of the Town Hall, contains
some findings. In the
Parish Church of SS. Pietro and
Paolo it is possible to appreciate
some important paintings and
masterpieces. The Church of St.
Francesco di Paola is also
worth a mention.

DISCOVER
The whole municipal territory
testifies the traditional devoutness
of the people of The
Marche: several shrines and
small churches are spread
around the country side (e.g.
shrines devoted to St. Pietro
Martyr, St. Lucia, St. Martino).
Worth mentioning are also the
Church of Madonna del Vallato,
an old shrine, that Francesco
Maria della Rovere wanted to
enlarge and that contains a tempera
painting, dating from the
17 th century, as well as a very
unusual ex voto and a shrine
called Church of St. Caterina.
WORTH TASTING
Important production of wines
with Registered Designation of
Origin (Verdicchio dei Castelli di
Jesi, Rosso Piceno), table white
and red wines and the typical local
red wine Rosso Suasano. The
onions of Suasa are also excellent.

WORTH DISCOVERING
Driving to Senigallia you will
find Villa Pianetti, with annexed
church, standing on a hill in a
wide woody area. Castelleone
boasts also further green areas:
the Boschetto, near the Primary
School, the big wood area in
Croce del Termine, as well as the
whole course of Via del Bozzo,
with thick bushes and panoramic
hilly and badlands (calanchi)
landscape.
The course of the Cesano River
(including small water falls and
fishing areas) and the Nevola
River, with thick vegetation and
several forest trees, are suitable
areas to enjoy naturalistic tours.
