Around the year 680 some friars,
on advice of the bishop of
Marciano, moved in the
Monastery of S. Ippolito, sited
between Mount Matenano and
Mount Falcone. When Abbot
Wandelbert arrived at the
monastery in 790, the
monastery became a reference
centre for the spiritual life and
the safety of the local people.
Abbot Pietro, escaping from
the Farfense Abbey in Sabina,
besieged by the Saracens, took
refuge there a few time later. In
934 Abbot Raffredo arranged
to transfer in the village the
mortal vestments of St. Vittoria,
martyred in Rome in the 3 rd
century, whom the village is
named after.
Thanks to following population
increase and territorial extension
the village became a
lively medieval settlement,
which the Farfensi monks consolidated
their authority on. In
1357 it became the chief town
of the Farfense presidium, that
included at the time the most
part of the modern provinces of
Macerata and Ascoli Piceno.
The monks also contributed to
boost important productive activities
like agriculture, building
and handicrafts (copper and
wood).
WORTH VISITING
Santa Vittoria in Matenano is a
village of great historical, artistic
and literary interest, that can
boast many monumental
works, such us the 14 th century
embattled Tower of Abbot
Odoriso, the Church of St. Agostino
with 18 th century aristocratic
interior and 15 th century
cloister, the impressive Palazzo
Monti and Palazzo Melis, the
bridge Conti della Torre, the
historic Teatro del Leone, built
at beginnings of the 19 th century.
In the highest part of the village
is the parish Church of St.
Vittoria, big building, dating
from the late 18 th century, with
crypt containing the 15 th century
urn with Santa Vittoria’s relic.
Go further uphill and you
will reach the Cappellone, ruins
of a Farfense buildings, still
preserving Giacomo da Campli’s
valuable frescoes (1471).
In the village are also a Municipal
Library, historical archives
and a Municipal Museum.

The terrirory is sprinkled with
cloisters, churches and convents,
evidencing the spirituality,
that has always characterized
the area.
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are vincisgrassi,
tagliatelle, polenta, pig
meat, lamb, olive oil, white and
red wine, as well as vincotto
(literally cooked wine).

wide choice of hiking, mountain-bike
and horse trekking

WORTH DISCOVERING
Over the village is a thick
wood. The Park of St. Francesco
and the public gardens
are ideal places to relax. The
Sepe, as well as Palazzo della
Torre and the Town Hall are also
worth the effort to get a little
bit off the centre.
