Even if different archaeological
items have been found in the
hamlet Follonica, the origin of
the village can be identified
with the presence of a small friar
Church dedicated to St. Paolo.
This also explains the origin
of the geographical name Castrum
Monti Sancti Pauli, from
which the current name derives.
The earliest mention of the village
can be dated around 1079,
but in a document dated 1275
San Paolo is mentioned as a castle
of the country side (contado)
of Jesi for the first time. The dependance
on Jesi is further confirmed
in the Descriptio Marchiae
Anconitanae and again in
the Costituzioni Egidiane, enacted
in 1357 by Cardinal Albornoz.
After its transfer to the
Popedom the village of San
Paolo was extended in 1491.
Assembled to Monte Roberto in
1818, it got its autonomy again
from 1818 till 1929, when San
Paolo was assembled with
Staffolo; since 1946 it’s completely
administratively independent.
WORTH VISITING
Just entering the village, you
will find the 18 th century Palazzo
Bassi; in the heart of the
borgo stands the Parish
Church of St. Paolo, built at the
end of the 18 th century, that
contains an altar-piece representing
the Madonna with
Apostles, created by Pomarancio
in 1620; of particular interest
in the same Church are an
organ by Feliciano Fedeli of
1737, a wrought-silver goblet of
1523, coming from the old
Church of St. Maria dell’Arco
(of which only ruins are available
nowadays) and a font of
1708. In the Church of the Misericordia,
also called Church
of the Cementery it is possible
to appreciate a wall painting, attributed
to by Andrea from Jesi,
representing the Madonna with
St Pauli’s people under her
cloak (the original piece is currently
covered by a copy). The
Town Hall and the elegant Civic
Tower (unfortunately it was
damaged by lightning in the
70s) date from the end of the
18 th century.

DISCOVER
To honour the vocation of this
land to wine-growing, typical
for the territory and characterized
by natural products, the
municipal authorities arranged
the restoration of old building in
the historical centre and created
the Bottega del Vino, an unmissable
stopover in the local touristic
itineraries, where everyone
can enjoy a wide selection of
wines of the Marche.
WORTH TASTING
Thanks to the location, protected
from cold winds in winter,
but airy and cool in the summer,
the territory of San Paolo is very
suitable for wine-growing: land

year, 4.000 litres Verdicchio dei
Castelli di Jesi. Olive oil is also
excellent.
SOMETHING TO DO
The village is located on the
right side of the Esino River, on
a hill leaning over the Staffolo’s
hill. It’s a very suitable area for
walks and excursions, enjoying
amazing panoramic views of
both the coast and the Apennines.
WORTH DISCOVERING
The area is characterized by so
called “bollitori” (kettles),
small mud-volcanos, often inspiring
old folk legends and
imaginings, created by gas
erupting after going through
soaked clay strata. These formations
are particularly present
in Fonte and Battinebbia, San
Paolo’s hamlets.
