Scanty information are available
about San Giorgio’s history.
What we know for certain,
is that the building of the Castle
dates from before the year
1000 and already in the Middle
Ages it was a property of Fano
Abbey of San Paterniano, together
with the neighbouring
Castle of Poggio. Afterwards,
keeping being owned by the
Popedom, it was incorporated
into the government system of
the Vicariate of Mondavio, for
which San Giorgio used to collect
in its archives every deed
issued in the surrounding villages.
In the 16 th century it became
a feud of the Leonelli
family. After Napoleon’s domination
in Italy, the village got
back under the ecclesiastic
government, until it joined by
plebiscite the new-born Italian
Kingdom in November 1860.
WORTH VISITING
The Castle still boasts the old
ring walls, containing the
Church of St. Giorgio, that was
maybe erected earlier than the
13 th century, but it was re-built
in Neoclassical style in 1841;
in it you can see a wooden Crucifix.
Of great interest in the village,
lying downhill the Castle,
is the Church of Holy Spirit of
1787, serving today as stage for
cultural events. It contains
some valuable paintings, one
representing the Descent of the
Holy Spirit, dating from the
16 th century. Not far away from
the village is the 19 th century
Small Church of the Crucifix,
built over the earlier Church of
St. Maria di Castagneto, which
only some old frescoes are left
of.

There are different local products
and recipes, based on tradition
and wellness.
WORTH DISCOVERING
Among the different historical
and naturalistic tours we suggest
the one leading to the
small castle of Poggio; in it
were the Franciscan Church
and the Convent of St. Maria
della Misericordia, erected in
1523 by the noble man Mariotto
Sajano; now you can visit the
20th century Church of St.
Pasquale, a big building, containing
old worthy paintings
and wooden sacred furniture,
like the monumental 18 th century
choir, belonging to the earlier
church. The modern church
is now a place of local pilgrimage.
