By the year 1000 the Castle of
Rapagnano was under the rule
of the Bishop of Fermo; in
1229 it became a property of
Montegiorgio, but Fermo took
it back in 1244. The later history
of Rapagnano is part of
Fermo’s history.
WORTH VISITING
In the historic centre you can
see the remains of the ring
walls, with its particular
ovoidal lay out, and three
keeps; at the northern site is
the Porta da Bora, on the
southern side is the Porta della
Pesa, gateway to the main
square. On the square is the
Town Hall (18 th century), designed
by the architect Virginio
Bracci, housing different
documents and a Library
of great value. In the town
centre is the parish Church of
St. Giovanni Battista, erected
in the period between 1808
and 1822 on the area, that was
once occupied by two earlier
churches. The present church
has got a slender facade with
soaring bell tower. Worth
mentioning are also the
Church of St. Rosalia (1754),
the Church of St. Antonio (17 th
century), the Painting gallery
and the Parish Museum. Outside
the village you can find
three rural churches: the
Church of St. Colomba, rebuilt
in the 18 th century, ruins
of the Church of St. Tiburzio
(1507) and the Church of the
Beate Vergine Maria.

DISCOVER
In 1880 archaeological excavations
were carried out in the
hamlet San Triburzio: findings
of the early Roman and Roman
time, including shields, spears,
bronze helmets with embossed
decorations are now displayed
in the Archaelogical Museum
in Ancona. Rapagnano is Pope
John XVIII’s birth place
(1004-9).
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are virgin
olive oil, traditional sausages
and salamis, d.o.c. wines Rosso
Piceno and Falerio, honey,
hand made pasta recipes (tagliatelle
and “vincisgrassi”) and
the delicious Ascoli’s stuffed
olives.
SOMETHING TO DO
The following sport facilities
are available: a soccer field, a
tennis court, a five-a-side football
ground, two municipal indoor
sports centres and a sport
field, including a cycle path.
WORTH DISCOVERING
Rapagnano is sited on a hill on
the left side of the Tenna Valley,
about 20 km from the sea.
In the village is a public garden
and in the hamlet San Triburzio
is a park with a play ground for
children. The hilly country side
of the Tenna Valley is a suitable
area for different walking tours
of great naturalistic and historical
interest.
