Perched ontop a rocky spur
south of Mount Falcone, the
old village of Montefalcone
Appennino dominates the valley
with its unique skyline. The
square-plan Tower, soaring in
the highest point of the village,
is the last trace of the medieval
castle, erected by the Farfensi
monks. After being a feud of
the Farfa Abbey, it became an a
free Municipality in 1214. In
1212, when the dispute between
Emperor and the Popedom
had almost concluded,
Fermo and Ascoli Piceno took
over the territories and the
properties of the Farfa Abbey
in Santa Vittoria, including
Montefalcone. It’s in that occasion,
when the tower, standing
still nowadays, was erected.
WORTH VISITING
The charming natural setting is
further embellished by religious
buildings like the Church
of St. Pietro in Penne, in which
the Gothic traits of the façade
and the Romanesque elements
of the bell tower match perfectly.
Inside are a wood font and a
cross of the 15 th century. Evidences
of the original village
are the Rocca and the castle
walls, dating from the 11 th -
13 th centuries; of great value is
also Palazzo Felici, hosting the
Pietro Alemanno’s Museum.
Don’t miss visiting the Fossiles
and natural history Museum
“Neldo Bruni”. Leaving the
village towards Comunanza,
across the tunnel, created in
1833 under the Pontifical Government,
you will see the 15 th
century Church of the Scalelle
with its Renaissance portal,
15 th century frescos and a holy
water stoup, dated back from
the later 16 th century. On the
way to Smerillo is the 17 th century
Church of St. Antonio,
which has been recently restored.
Just ahead is the Convent
of the Friars Minor, also
called Convent of St. Giovanni.

DISCOVER
It is possible to enjoy a naturalistic
route around the vertiginous
vertical spur (elevation
over 200 metres), made of the
typical local sandstone with
tertiary fossiliferous strata.
There are lots of chestnut trees
and broad-leaved coppices. A
pine wood, located just off the
village, scents the air. The fauna
in the surrounding country
side includes jays, birds of pray
and squirrels. According to a
recent custom, most of the
house fronts are painted with
bizarre decorations.

Notable variety of red wines
and delicious cheeses.
SOMETHING TO DO
There are a lot of mountainbike
tracks in different difficulty
levels, used to train for the
yearly marathon. A target
shooting ground is also available.

WORTH DISCOVERING
Near the Cemetery is the Convent
of Zoccolanti with its 15 th
century cloister. The church
contains a polyptych by Pietro
Alemanno. Have a walk to the
Mount Falcone (904 m) to enjoy
the amazing panoramic
view.
Not far away archaeology fans
can appreciate ruins of the Roman
thermal baths of Colle
Terme. This is also a suitable
area for walking excursions
itineraries suiting all tastes.
The village is sited on a overhanging
rocky spur, therefore
entry access is possible only on
foot, across narrow and steep
streets. Giardino Tronelli lying
on a cliff slope and the ditch
“Magica avventura” (Magic
adventure), with water falls and
small lakes, are also worth a
mention.
