The origins of Carassai are very
remote, as the big amount of
traces of the Neolithic period,
found on its territory, evidences.
In the Middle Ages the country
was called Castrum Guardiae
and was under the rule of Brunforte;
in 1252 it passed under the
control of Matthew d’Acquaviva,
returning later to the family
Brunforte, who gave it to Fermo
in 1321. Accused of insubordination
against the Popedom, it was
firstly destroyed between 1324
and 1325 and in 1356 it underwent
a second destruction by order
of the Cardinal Albornoz.
WORTH VISITING
In the village you can see the remains
of fortified city walls, dating
from the 14 th and 15 th centuries,
with polygonal and
squared keeps. The Old Castle
was built between the 6 th and 9 th
century; the New Castle was
built in the 13 th century. The
Church of St. Maria del Buon
Gesù, rebuilt in the 18 th century,
preserves a wooden sculpture of
Abruzzi art, several frescoes of
the 16 th century, a canvas with a
Crucifixion by Andrea Boscolo,
a painting of Vincenzo Pagani
and an other painting of the 17 th
century, attributed to the Pomarancio’s
School. The Church
of St. Lorenzo Martyr was rebuilt
in the 18 th century. Moreover, 3
km away from the town centre is
the medieval castle of Rocca di
Montevarmine of the 10 th century,
containing the Church of St.
Pietro, which is located near the
CARASSAI
Church of St. Michele. Worth
visiting is also the Abbey of St.
Angelo in Farfense Piano (11 th
century), located on the right
bank of the Aso River, and the
Municipal Archaeological Museum.
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are: virgin
olive oil, traditional sausages, including
the famous “ciauscolo”,
d.o.c. Wines Rosso Piceno and
Falerio; different desserts like
Easter ring-shaped cakes, pizza
with cheese, wine must ciambellas
(ring-shaped cakes) and currant
buns.

The following sport facilities are
available: a soccer field, a five-aside
football field, a tennis court,
a basketball ground, a motocross
field and a skating rink.

DISCOVER
The village is located on the hill
ridge between the Aso River and
the Menocchia River, about
15km away from the sea: from
everywhere you can enjoy an
amazing panorama, sweeping
away from the coast to the Apennines.
There are also two parks
with recreational facilities: the
municipal park and the playground
for children. You can enjoy
historical and cultural excursions,
on foot or by mountain
bike, at the discovery of monuments
and churches of the territory,
and also excursions along the

paths of the lush Aso Valley or
along the hilly paths, that lead to
