The origins of the town date<br />
from the end of the 6 th century<br />
when people of Ascoli took<br />
refuge to escape from Longobard<br />
invasions. In 1039 the village<br />
was given by Longino di<br />
Azione, Longobard feudal<br />
Lord, to the Abbey of Farfa; its<br />
monks fortified the village and<br />
turned it into one of the most<br />
beautiful castles in the area. In<br />
1585 it became part of the Papal<br />
States, until the Unification<br />
of Italy in 1861.<br />
WORTH VISITING<br />
The Church of Santa Maria de<br />
Cellis, dating from the 11 th century,<br />
contains a wooden crucifix<br />
of the 14 th century and a<br />
fresco of 1512, representing the<br />
Madonna of Mercy by Vincenzo<br />
Pagani. The 17 th century<br />
Sanctuary of St. Thomas Becket<br />
preserves a Madonna between<br />
SS. Tommaso and Francesco<br />
and a wooden statue of<br />
St. Tommaso. The Church of St.<br />
Lorenzo Martyr (1792) is a<br />
work of Pietro Maggi. Worth<br />
visiting is also the Town Hall,<br />
the remains of the high ring<br />
walls and the Porta della Vittoria<br />
(historic town gate).<br />
WORTH TASTING<br />
Local specialities are: virgin<br />
olive oil, pecorino cheese, traditional<br />
salami; d.o.c. wines<br />
Rosso Piceno and Falerio,<br />
handmade pasta (timballi e<br />
tagliatelle), mushrooms, white<br />
and black truffle, lamb meat<br />
and mutton, cakes (frustingo),<br />
pizza with cheese, pizza with<br />
figs.<br />

sports ground and Boules (Italian<br />

WORTH DISCOVERING<br />
Montedinove is located on the<br />
ridge between the Aso Valley<br />
and the Tesino Valley; from the<br />
hill you can enjoy a wide<br />
panoramic view, sweeping<br />
away from the Sibillini Mountains<br />
to the Adriatic Sea. Within<br />
the town, in the hamlet San<br />
Tommaso, there is a municipal<br />
playground. The territory is included<br />
in the Sibillini Mountain<br />
Community (Comunità<br />
Montana dei Sibillini), habitat<br />
of a significant natural and<br />
landscape interest, which offers<br />
the possibility of different<br />
walking or mountain-bike excursions,<br />
at the discovery of<br />
different artistic natural and<br />
cultural treasures of the area.<br />
