The origins of the town date
from the end of the 6 th century
when people of Ascoli took
refuge to escape from Longobard
invasions. In 1039 the village
was given by Longino di
Azione, Longobard feudal
Lord, to the Abbey of Farfa; its
monks fortified the village and
turned it into one of the most
beautiful castles in the area. In
1585 it became part of the Papal
States, until the Unification
of Italy in 1861.
WORTH VISITING
The Church of Santa Maria de
Cellis, dating from the 11 th century,
contains a wooden crucifix
of the 14 th century and a
fresco of 1512, representing the
Madonna of Mercy by Vincenzo
Pagani. The 17 th century
Sanctuary of St. Thomas Becket
preserves a Madonna between
SS. Tommaso and Francesco
and a wooden statue of
St. Tommaso. The Church of St.
Lorenzo Martyr (1792) is a
work of Pietro Maggi. Worth
visiting is also the Town Hall,
the remains of the high ring
walls and the Porta della Vittoria
(historic town gate).
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are: virgin
olive oil, pecorino cheese, traditional
salami; d.o.c. wines
Rosso Piceno and Falerio,
handmade pasta (timballi e
tagliatelle), mushrooms, white
and black truffle, lamb meat
and mutton, cakes (frustingo),
pizza with cheese, pizza with
figs.

The following sport facilities
are available: a tennis court, a
sports ground and Boules (Italian
bocce) rinks.
WORTH DISCOVERING
Montedinove is located on the
ridge between the Aso Valley
and the Tesino Valley; from the
hill you can enjoy a wide
panoramic view, sweeping
away from the Sibillini Mountains
to the Adriatic Sea. Within
the town, in the hamlet San
Tommaso, there is a municipal
playground. The territory is included
in the Sibillini Mountain
Community (Comunità
Montana dei Sibillini), habitat
of a significant natural and
landscape interest, which offers
the possibility of different
walking or mountain-bike excursions,
at the discovery of
different artistic natural and
cultural treasures of the area.
