In 1309 Cossignano became
part of the possessions of the
Abbey of Farfa in the Picene.
The village became autonomous
in the 14 th century,
but it has been a disputed territory
between Fermo and Ascoli
Piceno for a long time, because
of its strategic position.
WORTH VISITING
In the historic centre you can
see the town walls with its
Keeps, the “Grottoni”, the Porta
Levante, (eastern town gate)
also known as St. George’Gate
and the Porta da Sole.On the
square you can find the Civic
Tower (15 th century) and the
Church of Assunta (18 th century),
which preserves some
paintings by Nicola Monti, including
the Assumption and St.
George, as well as a Madonna
with Child and a St. Domenico,
attributed to Maratta’s School.
In the historic centre you can
visit the Municipal Library, the
municipal Museum Antiquarium
“Nicola Pansoni” and the
Municipal Historical Archives.
On the town walls you can see
the Church of Annunziata
(12 th -13 th centuries), which
preserves frescoes from different
periods, including a St. Lucia
by Crivelleschi’s School,
an altar-piece representing the
saints Antonio Abate, Antonio
da Padova and Giobbe by Vincenzo
Pagani and a Deposition,
attributed to Cola dell’Amatrice.
Outside the town walls is
the “Casa di terra”, a building

dating from the year 1000 with
a supporting structure, made of
earth and straw.
Worth visiting is the Villa Trocchi
(end of 700), considered
one of the most beautiful villas
in the province, with a garden
and surrounded by a park of
century-old pines.
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are: the
“Taccù” (first course consisting
of a mixture of flour and
water), handmade tagliatelle
and “maccheroncini”, stuffed
olives and fried cremini, beans
with pig rinds, stockfish with
celery and potatoes, Frustingo,
Christmas cake, made with
figs, walnuts and raisins.
SOMETHING TO DO
The following sport facilities
are available: a soccer field, a
tennis court, a five-a-side football
field and a multipurpose
gymnasium.
WORTH DISCOVERING
Cossignano rises on a hill between
the rivers Menocchia
and Tesino, about 15km away
from the sea. Adjacent to the
historic centre is a green public
area. For those, who love walking
and cycling in nature,
there’s the municipal circuit
called “Castello di Marte”: it
starts from Carassai, continues
across the picturesque rural
area of Cossignano and joins
the circuit of Montalto delle
Marche.
