The village has been inhabited
before and during the Roman’s
time, as the archaeological
findings, discovered in the
Castelluccio area, prove, but
Mergo experienced its most
flourishing period in the Middle
Ages. In a document of
1233 Mergo is mentioned as a
castle belonging to the territory
of Serra San Quirico. The Town
Hall houses an important
parchment dating from the
middle of the 16 th century, representing
the Castle Articles,
that is life regulations for the
inhabitants of the castle. Mergo
has been always depending on
Serra San Quirico, with exception
of a short phase, during
which it belonged to Jesi. In
1827 Pope Leo XII issued a decree,
designating Mergo as
Municipality (Comune) and set
up the parish of San Lorenzo.
From 1928 until 1946 was incorporated
with Rosora, until it
gained its autonomy again.
Mergo’s coat of arms shows a
bird (a merganser); the built-up
area rose around the Castle, but
only fragments of the Castle
walls are still to see nowadays.
WORTH VISITING
The territory of Mergo rises almost
unexpected on the left
side of the Esino Valley, with
the Apennines on the background.
Evidences of its old
past are the ruins of the town
walls, remains of a quadrangular
keep and the castle gate; on
one of the altars in the Parish
MERGO
Church of St. Lorenzo it is possible
to appreciate a Rosary
Madonna by Ercole Ramazzani
from Arcevia. Of particular
interest are the Palazzo of St.
Marciana, belonging to the old
Borgiani family, Palazzo Conti
in the hamlet Acquabona and
Palazzo dei Conti Vallemani in
the hamlet Montirone.

DISCOVER
The name derives from Merago,
akin to the medieval Latin
word mera, lacus palustris,
“marshland”, clearly referring
to the Esino river, that flows
downhill the village. Around
the middle of the 15 th century
Mergo together with Massaccio
and Maiolati Spontini was
the scene of the activity of the
heretical sect Fraticelli.

Typical dishes are polenta with
stockfish, beans with pork
rinds, tripe, “braciole del contadino”,
farmer’s steaks, crescia
(bread pizza) and …Verdicchio
d.o.c., of course.
