The first people, who resided in
the valley were Umbrian people
of the civilization of Villanova.
In the 12 th century the territory
of Castelsantangelo sul Nera
was included among the possessions
of the Lord of the Castle of
Norcia and in 1255 it was given
to the most important Lord of
Visso. Castelsantangelo became
one of the five “Guaite” of Visso
and since then, it followed its
historical evolution. In 1912 it
obtained its administrative autonomy.
WORTH VISITING
It still preserves the medieval
walls and the original framework
of the 15 th century. The
Church of St. Martino, built in
Romanesque style with its elegant
bell tower with double
lancet windows, is full of frescoes,
made by the Umbrian
School. The Church of St. Sebastiano
dates from the 17 th century.
The 14 th century parish
church of St. Stefano boasts a
Romanesque portal and contains
a stone font of the 14 th century.
The Monastery of St. Liberatore,
built in the 13 th century, is surrounded
by massive walls, that
once delimited the castle; now it
preserves an interesting fresco in
the apse wall, as well as some
paintings, made by the Umbrian
school. Worth seeing is also the
Porta Castello with a very
charming massive stone portal,
Porta Norcina with a double
arch and Porta S. Angelo (historic
town gates).

The origin of the name dates
back to the 14 th century, when
different local people, exposed to
the danger of plunders and incursions,
joined together, looking
for protection and freedom.
From that moment they gave the
name of Castrum Sancti Angeli
to the big village, that they
founded, putting it under the protection
of the Arcangel Michele.
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are: emmer,
beans, lentils, mushrooms, black
truffles, pecorino cheese, the ciauscolo
(soft spreadable salami), the
so called torciglione (snakeshaped
cake stuffed with walnuts,
almonds and jam), tarts with blackberries
and chestnuts jam, sweet
fritters, sweet ravioli with ricotta,
the so called tozzetti, ring-shaped
cakes and Carnival Castagnole.

The following sport facilities are
available: a tennis court, a Bocce
rink centre, a multi-sports centre
and 4 ski-lifts on the Mount Prata.
Cross-country skiing opportunities
in the nearby tableland of Pian
Perduto.

Park, in a wooded area, sited on
the western side of the park. It is a
starting point for wonderful walks
and excursions on foot, horseback
or by mountain bike. The habitat
of the area is characterized by unspoiled
and lush vegetation and
it’s very rich in water. The most
evocative places are: Fonte del
Lupo (1775m) close to a beautiful
pine forest, Forca di Gualdo
(1469m) and the tableland of Pian
Perduto (1345m), with its unique
landscape, indeed.
