The town originated from the
union of three settlements, developed
in the neighbourhood
of the castles of Serravalle, Tufo
and Serramula. Thanks to its
particular position at the entrance
to the Chienti Valley, surrounded
by mountains and
woods, it has always been the
scene of military events, as well
as trade and cultural dealings.
WORTH VISITING
Now you can see the imposing
ruins and one of the five towers
belonging to the charming Castle
of the Da Varano family,
mighty fortress built by the
Dukes Da Varano in 1240. Interesting
is also the Fortress of
the Castle in Percanestro,
which preserves the remains of
the external walls, as well as the
ruins of the Castle d’Elce.
Worth visiting is the Basilica of
St. Maria in Plestia, built on the
ruins of a Roman temple. The
Church of Madonna del Piano,
built in the 15 th century, preserves
several frescoes of the
16 th century. The Church of St.
Lucia, of the 13 th century, was
built on a monastic structure;
now you can see only the sacristy,
that preserves some interesting
frescoes, a Crucifixion of
the 16 th century by Simone and
Gianfrancesco de Magistris and
a painting by Giovanni Andrea
da Caldarola. The Church of
Madonna del Sasso (15 th -16 thcentury),
in the hamlet San
Martino, contains a fresco
showing the Last Judgement.
The Camaldolese Abbey of St.
Salvatore, in the hamlet Acquapagana,
dating from the year
1000, was rebuilt in Gothic
style in the 14 th century. The
Abbey of San Bartolomeo in
Brogliano, with a former
monastery belonging to it, dates
back to the 13 th century.
Worth seeing are the Church of
St. Lorenzo in the hamlet Dignano,
the Ospizio dei Pellegrini
(13 th - 14 th century), which preserves
a part of its facade with a
pointed arch stone portal; the
Botte dei Varano, important hydraulic
work made in squared
stone, dating from the second
half of the 15 th century, and the
Town Hall, built in 1960, which
represents the only work of the
architect P. L. Nervi in the
Marche Region.
SOMETHING MORE TO
DISCOVER
Important fossils findings of animals
have been discovered in
the hamlets Collecurti and
Madonna del Piano. The fossils,
dating from to the late
Pleistocene, consist mainly of
big Vertebrata: ancient species
similar to the modern hippopotamus,
rhinoceros, elephant,
bear, deer, bison and the
sabre teeth tiger. The importance
of the deposit is due to the
simultaneous presence of fossils
of tropical fauna and colder
climate animals.

sausages, mushrooms, black
truffles, handmade pasta and
cakes (pannociato, frostenga,
torciglione and Easter pizza).
SOMETHING TO DO
The following sport facilities
are available: two multi-purpose
outdoor fields, a sports
hall, two tennis courts. Worth
remembering is the Rock Wall
on the slopes of the Mount Igneo,
suitable for climbers training.
WORTH DISCOVERING
Here you can find two green areas
with recreational facilities:
the public Park Cagnolo and the
Parco fluviale. Serravalle di
Chienti is part of the Camerino
Mountain Community (Comunità
Montana di Camerino),
territory rich in naturalistic and
landscape beauties. You can enjoy
numerous historical-cultural
trips in an area, sprinkled
with monasteries, castles and
sanctuaries. The territory offers
naturalistic tours of great interest,
too. In particular periods of
the year you can go gathering
different fruits of the wood
(mushrooms, truffles, and so on
...)
