MOUNTAIN DEWS l
Montecopiolo lies in the heart
of the Montefeltro land, on the
top of an almost 1000 metres
high rock, mostly overhanging
all around, and it’s considered
as the cradle of the Dukedom
of Urbino and its historical
lords, the Montefeltro family.
Antonio Carpegna of Montecopiolo
(father of certain Montefeltrano
I, who is considered
as the founder of the Feltro dynasty),
bestowed with the title
of Duke of Montefeltro by the
Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa)
is actually the founder
of one of the mightiest families
of the Middle Ages and the Italian
Renaissance. The Rocca, of
which only ruins are available
nowadays, withstood the assaults
of the Malatesta Family,
but was destroyed later on by
Medici Family in 1520.
Montecopiolo, meaning “a
cupola” (dome-shaped mount)
or “cupo”, (dark, full of caves)
soars with its white calcareous
rocks amid the Upper Conca
Valley, overlooking the village
of Villagrande beneath.
WORTH VISITING
On the Mount Carpegna we
suggest a visit of the architectonical
complex of the Hermitage
of the Beata Vergine del
Faggio, the earliest information
about which dates from the
beginnings of the 13 th century.
Now it includes a Church, a
stout bell tower and a “romitory”.
The 12 th century Torre di
Vedetta (Lookout tower) in
Monteboaggine, overlooking
the Foglia and the Conca Valleys,
is also very fascinating.
SOMETHING MORE TO
DISCOVER
On the Mount Nerone, in Montecopiolo
municipal territory is
a faunistic park, a perfect place
to engage in short walking
tours and sighting fallow deer,
set up in the park some years
ago.
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are: gnocchi
with wild green vegetables
stuffing, hare à la Pianacquadio,
larks with grapes, lamb,
“Molino bosco” trouts, “frittelle”
(Fritters) of Montecopiolo,
blackberry jam tart, typical
cheeses, meat and wild
game, mushrooms.
SOMETHING TO DO
The main attraction are the
woody mountains of Villagrande,
a winter ski resort, with
four ski-slopes (two of them in
Villagrande and two in Eremo
di Montecopiolo on the Mount
Carpegna) provided with skilift
facilities.
WORTH DISCOVERING
The Municipality of Montecopiolo
lies in the territory of the
Sasso Simone and Simoncello
Regional Park: among the different
naturalistic routes we
suggest the ones leading to the
springs Costa dei Salti and to
the Beechwood of Piana-
