Archaeological findings, dating
from the Palaeolithic Period, attest
the human presence in the
area in prehistoric times. Thereafter
we have no further information
about the settlement till the
conquest by Rome. In the Middle
Ages Colmurano became a fortified
village, feud of the Gualtieri
family. Later it passed under the
rule of Tolentino, which elected
the Priors and the Podestà; however,
it still maintained a certain
freedom, as the existence of the
statutes, containing the rules that
regulated the life of the small
town, evidences. At the beginning
of the 19 th century it regained
its independence.
WORTH VISITING
The Church of SS. Annunziata,
built between the end of the fourteenth
century and the first half of
the fifteenth century, is characterized
by the brick doorway,
decorated with floral motifs and
by the presence of valuable majolica
bowls on its facade. Inside
you can find a fresco representing
the Nativity, attributed to
Giovanni De Magistris from Caldarola
(1560), a wooden crucifix,
an illuminated parchment of Paul
V and some Baroque picture
frames. The Church of St. Rocco,
or della Loggia, is a small square
chapel with segmented dome,
built between the sixteenth and
the seventeenth century and restored
later. In the sacred building,
ancient refuge of pilgrims,
there is a fresco of a Madonna
Enthroned and Saints, dated

1536. The Parish Church of St.
Donato preserves ancient tabernacles,
interesting paintings and
revered shrines. Some sections
and a defensive tower are what
remain of the castle walls, reinforced
by ramparts.
WORTH TASTING
Local specialities are: virgin
olive oil, vincotto (literally
cooked wine), salami, cheese,
homemade pasta (tagliatelle and
“vincisgrassi”), bread with nuts,
Frustingo (Christmas cake), “cicerchiata”
(Carnival cake), Easter
pizzas.
SOMETHING TO DO
The following sport facilities are
available: a Bocce rink centre, a
tennis court, a five-a-side football
field, a stadium and 2 multipurpose
fields.
WORTH DISCOVERING
Colmurano belongs to the territory
of the Monti Azzurri Mountain
Community (Comunità Montana
dei Monti Azzurri); it is located
on the top of a hill, offering
a wide panorama, that covers the
surrounding hills and the chain of
the Sibillini Mountains. Within
the village there are several green
areas equipped for children, such
as Parco della Rimembranza and
the green space dedicated “to the
Children of the world.” There are
lots of historical and naturalistic
routes in the territory of the Comunità
Montana dei Monti Azzurri,
called “the territory of
small charms”.
