The origin of the Castle of Petra
Rubea dates from the year
1000. Following the splitting
of the Counts of Montecopiolo
into two branches by the middle
of the 13 th century, some of
the properties passed under the
rule of Count Taddeo, lord of
Petrarubbia. Disputed between
the Malatesta and the Montefeltro
families, the Castle
(perched atop a hill like a eagle
nest - the eagle is also in its coat
of arms) passed to the Montefeltro
family and, as usual,
Duke Federico commissioned
the extension and the strengthening
of the Rocca.
The only remains of the old
structure are the Torre del falco
(Hawk tower) and the stone
balls, used in the shooting point
holes, built into the walls of the
town houses. In 1631 it passed
under the rule of the Popedom.
During the last years people
abandoned the old village and
moved down in the valley.
WORTH VISITING
Appreciate the fascinating historic
centre, with the ruins of
the old Castello-torre (Tower
Castle) of Pietrarubbia, indicated
by Cardinal Albornoz as
“castrum inexpugnabile” in the
14 th century; the Convent of
Friars Minor in Ponte Cappuccini
was erected at beginnings
of the 16 th century, enlarged in
the 18 th century.
Of great interest are the Church
of St. Silvestro, containing a
marble altar and a modern rose
window by sculpturer Arnaldo
Pomodoro, (Pietrarubbia Honorary
Freeman) and the Romanesque
Church of St. Arduino.
In the Multimedial Natural
Museum you will discover information
and peculiarities
about the flora, the fauna and
the geology of Montefeltro.
SOMETHING MORE TO
DISCOVER
On display in the historic centre
is a Sculpture Permanent
exhibition, set up by the Centro
TAM (Trattamento Artistico
Metalli - Artistic metalwork
foundation), created by the
Municipality with Arnaldo Pomodoro’s
partnership. The
Centro per l’Artigianato Artistico
del Montefeltro (Montefeltro
Artistic Handycraft foundation)
contains important
handicrafts, designed by local
craftsmen.
WORTH TASTING
Tasteful black truffle or “scorzone”,
prestigious white truffle
and mushrooms. Excellent
pasta recipes. “Polenta” is a
typical local dish, mostly accompanied
by beans or meat
ragù-sauce with wild game.
Notable main courses are: wild
game, lamb, cattle farmed in
the local pastureland, and pork
meat. Specialities are prosciutto
di Carpegna (Carpegna
ham), cheeses, honey, wild
herbs, piadina and local cakes
like bustrengo.
WORTH DISCOVERING
The century-old Municipal
Park of St. Silvestro lies along
the Montefeltro Provincial
Road in the Hamlet Ponte Cappuccini.
It’s here, where Matteo
da Bascio, who inspired the
foundation of the Capuchin
Friars, lived in the 15 th century.
The area has been turned into a
botanic garden, studying and
collecting the typical flora of
the Middle Apennines, provided
with picnic areas. Ponte
Cappuccini is located in the
Sasso Simone and Simoncello
Regional Park, departure point
of several fascinating naturalistic
routes on the Mounts
Carpegna and Boaggine. Very
suitable horse trekking itineraries,
too. Don’t miss paying a
visit to the rocky spur of Pietrafagnana.
