Frame 9: Architectural aid for tourist accommodation in France
In France the CAUE (the committees for architecture, town-planning and the environment) are
departmental bodies for awareness raising, training and exchange. At the request of municipalities,
groups of municipalities or associations, they give expert help with the taking into consideration of
the environment and the landscape when building or renovating. The CAUE contribute to tourism in
several ways:
• With studies on a specific type of accommodation. The CAUE of Upper-Corsica has, for instance, conducted
in-depth studies on the Corsican hotel industry, its contribution to the tourist history of the island, the
transformation of old constructions into hotels and the rehabilitation of the quality of the existing
constructions as well as the building of new characteristic hotels.
• The reclassifying of ageing tourist resorts. The CAUE of Herault contributes to the Languedoc coastal
resorts with intervention in their public areas.
• The renovation of rural constructions and their transformation into typical accommodation. The Lot CAUE
carried out studies on the use of the small heritage for tourist ends in their “micro-self-catering
accommodation” operation before extending it to the rest of the rural constructions. The Midi-Pyrenees
region, in a joint venture with the counties, decided to support the reconversion of constructions
representative of the rural heritage into tourist typical accommodation throughout its territory. There are
many types of assistance: financial aid over a 5-year period, qualitative and quantitative market studies, the
appellation “Art de Vivre”, and an assignment to give overall architectural aid. Thirty-nine operations have
been financed and supported with 700 000 euros of public aid.
