MAPPING THE MOUNTAINOUS ROUTES USED BY THE FIGHTERS.
PROPOSALS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
OF THE NOWADAYS AREA
In this paper, some of the mountainous routes used by the fighters of the Greek
struggle in Macedonia (1896-1908), mainly those used by Pavlos Melas, are described
and mapped. A proposal for establishing a network of rambler trails of environmental
and cultural interest is also presented to contribute in the sustainable development of
the nowadays area, by employing environmental-friendly methods of fostering tourism.
This network will be composed by a series of long distance or shorter trails, that were
used by the fighters, which will allow walkers to pass through natural landscapes of
outstanding beauty, traditional villages, and to visit places and monuments associated
with important events of national history.
