CENTRES OF ORGANIZATION, ACTION AND RESISTANCE
IN THE PREFECTURE OF KILKIS DURING THE MACEDONIAN STRUGGLE
The text refers to the administrative and church subordination of the regions of the
Prefecture of Kilkis in the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, to the
composition of the population and to the social and economical situation. It also refers
to the armed period of the Macedonian Struggle after 1870.
The Greeks faced difficulties. Due to the fact that in Kilkis was a well organized
Exarchic Community and in Arzan and Amatovou lakes Komitatzides rushed from,
the region was the passage of opponent groups from Bulgaria to Macedonia.
As the most important centres of organization, action and resistance we consider
the ones which were recognized by the Greek Consulate of Thessaloniki, and they were
in constant communication with it. Such centres were Harissis Farm in Kallindria, on
the railway of Thessaloniki-Serres, Hadzilazarou Farm in Yiannes (today Metalliko)
and west of Kilkis the small town of Goumenissa, where before 1900 doctor Sakellariou
was appointed as a secret agent by Filippos Dragoumis.
Information about the above mentioned centres and other smaller ones were taken
from the relevant bibliography and unpublished documents.
A short reference is also made in smaller centres-villages in the province of Peonia
where groups of Greeks had been organized and had acted. Such were Agios Petros,
Livadia in Paiko and Scra.
