MACEDONIA AND THE UNDECLARED WAR OF ΤΗΕ GREEK ARMY
1904-1908
Macedonian Fight (1904-1908), so much as an idea as well as an execution was a
strange defensive but unorthodox war without a defined frond line and troops in the
battlefield. The frond of this war was all the occupied, at the time, by Turks Macedonia
and main opponents were the Bulgarians in one hand, that were carrying out an
intense effort for the predominance in Macedonia and the hole of the Greeks in the
other, that was fighting a titanic holy fight in order to rescue and to maintain his
national substance and to hold on to its ancestors lands.
All means of unconventional war were used –legitimate and illegitimate– without
the objective of conquest of lands. The participation in armed bodies of volunteer
active Officers, men of clergy and distinguished personalities, made this fight the concern
of the whole nation. This fight was characterized «Rescue Fight», because at
this time (around 1903-1908) it was not possible to be carried out martial enterprises
in Macedonia for its liberation by the Greek Army, firstly because the international
public opinion did not thought highly of the nation and secondly because not suitable
preparation had been made. Therefore the population of Macedonia and Thrace, his
schools, his churches and the national conscience had to «be rescued» from turning
Bulgarian, the ferocity and the territorial extension of Bulgaria and when the time
would be right to occupy the territories that Greece had the most historical titles but
also compact and numerous Greek population.
