Hier wird deutlich, daß Globalisierung einen Einfluß auf die Maya
Spiritualiät hat und neue Möglichkeiten von Kontakten und
Wissensaneignung bietet. Als Gefahrenquelle für den eigentlichen
Inhalt der Maya Spiritualität bei der Zugänglichkeit für die
Öffentlichkeit sieht Thomas Hart die kommerzielle Verwendung.
„Masspublicity surrounding Mayan spirituality has removed
something of the mystic, something of the idea of service, of the idea
of community and that should surround the whole idea of practice
Mayan Spirituality. ... There is nothing about in the service, there
is nothing about obligation, there is nothing about paying, there is
nothing about suffering that is necessary to became a priest. It’s
something personal, something individual part of the massculture
and ripped out of it’s context.“ 112
Hierbei kommt die Befürchtung zum Ausdruck, daß Maya
Spiritualität im Kontext von Massenkultur nicht in ihrer Ganzheit
wahrgenommen wird, lediglich Teile davon adaptiert werden und
dadurch die eigentlichen Inhalte verloren gehen bzw. nicht
verstanden werden können, wie beispielsweise die soziale
Komponente oder die Verantwortung eines aj q´ij. Ebenso
beinhalten solche Praktiken einen Verlust des „Geheimen“, des
Mystischen, welches dieser sakralen Praxis anhaftet.
„On the other hand when you go public then obviously certain
things are lost as well. A lot of the holiness, and what it means to be
a Mayan priest are under attack, not under physical attack during
the army years ago, but simply it’s becoming vulgarised, are
becoming part of massculture. I think that to many people
becoming Mayan priest without the lifelong calling commitment and
