Mineralogical museum
of Wuerzburg University
Our visit of 13 December 2010
Since 1976, when it was established, the museum
offers different rock and stone collections. Some of
them can even be traced back to the old collection
of minerals dating from the end of XVIII century.
There is a main or permanent exhibition and many
additional ones. The museum has 5 major rooms
focused on special areas of mineralogy. Mrs. Dorothée
Kleinschrot is the director of museum and
was very kind to guide us through some of these
areas. The tour was quite enriching and extensive
and we could ask many additional questions about
the subject. It was unfortunate but understandable
that Mrs. Kleinschrot did not have the time to guide
us through all areas, so we had to be content with
discovering the rest of museum on our own. The
following areas were topics of our conversations:
– the Earth as part of solar system
– meteorites (meteorite collections) and Noerdlinger
Ries in Germany on the border of Bavaria as a
meteorite impact site
– structure of the Earth and Earth's dynamics;
– plate tectonics
We mentioned as well:
– Earth's crust and oceanic crust
– precious and jewellery stones
– mineral collection of Albert Schröder
Proustit
All minerals have different characteristics, such as
colour, odour, translucency and texture. There are
some specimen in the museum which can be closely
examined.
The mineral collection of Albert Schröder was bequeathed
to the mineralogical museum in Würzburg
after the death of the owner and is now an
important and enriching part of the whole collection.
Additional collections are about mining, meteorites
and Antarctic research.
The excursion to mineralogical museum took us
about 3 hours.
