German into English. The latter was the most popular
with the students. Sitting together with English
native speakers, fewer German native speakers
and also a whole bunch of others who work with
these two languages in addition to their mother
tongue was an exciting opportunity. The group
concept, too, where students with varying mother
tongues had to talk about their versions amongst
themselves first and then present their final version
to the whole class, were extremely interesting.
On our last day, we were given a tour around campus
by the head of the translation programme, Dr
Christina Schaeffner. She gave us an informative
account about the options with translation at Aston.
Then she showed us around to the library, the
language school rooms and the main building in
general – which is huge and labyrinthian.
Three days full of new impressions, unfamiliar academic
concepts, English ale and crazy shopping in
one of the most buzzing downtown centres of the
world, I thought everybody would be glad to go
home again, where things are more quiet. From
what I gather, though, I think our trip was a real
success and I'm certain that some of the students
who were with me have found their calling. That
was the purpose and I hope I'll get to do it again
next year.

Unsere Irlandfahrt
29.Oktober - 2. November 2010
Schon in unserem letzten Schuljahr entstand der
Vorschlag, einmal einen Kurztrip nach Irland zu machen.
Gesagt, getan. Anfang dieses Jahres planten
wir Schüler mithilfe von Frau Henn, unserer Englischlehrerin,
die aus Irland stammt, unseren Ausflug.
Am Freitag, dem 29.10., hob gegen 11:00 Uhr unser
Flugzeug in Frankfurt ab und knapp zwei Stunden
später landeten wir in Dublin, wo es in Strömen
regnete. Im Hotel begrüßte uns das Personal sehr
freundlich und wir bezogen unsere Zimmer, die sehr
sauber und bequem eingerichtet waren. Nachdem
wir uns ein bisschen ausgeruht hatten, erkundeten
wir das erste Mal unsere Umgebung mit ihren kleinen
Pubs, die wir dann auch am Abend besuchten.
Tag 2: Früh um 09:00 Uhr starteten wir unseren
Tag mit einem heißen Kaffee im Starbucks um die
Ecke. Danach ging es ab ans Meer. Bei strahlendem
