the tensile strength of steel could be increased by 7 times if the steel had 30% by<br />

weight of oriented carbon nanotubes in it. While all of these results are promising,<br />

there is much work <strong>to</strong> be done in this area, particularly in developing methods <strong>to</strong><br />

incorporate the tubes in<strong>to</strong> plastics and metals. This particular application, like some<br />

of the applications discussed earlier, will, of course, require inexpensive bulk<br />

fabrication of nanotubes.<br />
