WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW IF YOU HAVE TO EVACUATE<br />
In spite of tireless sandbagging efforts by friends and charitable strangers, the powerful<br />
floodwater cannot always be stopped. Some of us have already evacuated our homes. For<br />
others, evacuation is imminent. Whenever the water wins the battle, there is pain and loss.<br />
And by the time someone is forced to leave, often their energy is depleted and safety may be<br />
threatened. By preparing an evacuation plan in advance, flood victims can ensure that<br />
necessities are packed and the route is planned.<br />
If possible, gather important family documents and place them in a waterproof, portable<br />
container. Examples of documents you may save include:<br />
Insurance policies, wills, contracts, deeds, stock certificates and bonds<br />
Passports, social security cards, immunization records<br />
Bank account numbers, safe deposit box information<br />
Credit card account numbers and companies<br />
Inventory of valuable household goods, important telephone numbers<br />
Family records (birth, marriage, death certificates)<br />
Valuable photographs<br />
Here is a checklist of what you should have ready before you are forced to leave:<br />
Battery operated radio and spare batteries<br />
Flashlight and extra batteries<br />
First aid kit and manual<br />
Three-day supply of nonperishable foods and water (one gallon per day per person)<br />
Essential prescription and nonprescription medicines<br />
Mess kit (or paper plates, cups, and plastic utensils)<br />
Baby supplies such as formula, bottle, diapers, powdered milk and medications<br />
